City briefly
It’s getting hot in here Last week’s Insider was rather steamy. In case you forgot, our center spread featured the hunkiest hunks of Concord. Thanks to City Manager Tom Aspell’s weekly memo, Concord just got hotter. So hot, it’s on fire. Tom wrote that the New Hampshire Department of Fish and Game is planning a prescribed fire for this weekend at the Concord Muncipal Airport. Approximately 4.5 acres of understory in the woodland will...

How to be hilarious all the time
As a standup comic, I'm often times asked where comics get their material. Do we all just lead hysterical lives, filled with pratfalls and shaving-cream pies? Not so much, although the world would be a pretty cool place if that was true! But joke writing is a skill, and good comedy is frequently the result of taking events that are fairly mundane, and using that joke-writing skill to create something humorous. The great news is...
What the Carmelite Monastery means to me
We are fortunate to have many magnificant churches in Concord, but it's the people that make them special. My special place is the Carmelite Monastery. One day nearly 30 years ago, I decided to stop there. As I entered the grounds, I immediately felt the overwhelming presence of peace. I was curious about the Carmelite sisters who lived there. I knew that the Carmelite order was one of prayer and solitude. As I entered the lobby...
Behind the Carmelite Walls
Stepping onto the grounds of the Carmelite Monastery on last week, we weren't quite sure what to expect. Would the place of worship on Pleasant Street be a place so stuffy we'd be afraid to sneeze, or would we see nuns running around, shimmying and praising Jesus like Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act? Neither, as it turned out. Once inside, we were greeted by Sister Claudette Blais, a woman with a firm handshake and a soft...

One hunk for the road
Our Hunks of Concord issue was such a smashing success last week that we've decided to make it an annual issue. But first, let us anoint one final hunk. Kyle Barker of Concord was thrown under the bus by his girlfriend, Linda Parsons. “He's so hunky because he's not just another pretty face. As an architect, his commitment to sustainable design could make any lady's socially responsible heart beat...
