Instagram photo of the week – Tue, 24 Jun 2014
We’re trying to track down the artist who painted this picture so we can give them proper credit . . . wait, what’s that you say? This is actually an Instagram photo of the Upham-Walker House at 18 Park St. from user @archporn? Oh, great. But we’re still confused about who painted it.

Do some good for your community, and play a round of golf
Marshall Crane learned a lot from Frank Monahan. Over four years together at Bishop Brady, the two enjoyed a lot of success. With Monahan guiding the Green Giants varsity boys basketball team and Crane one of the squad’s best players, Bishop Brady had a run of three straight state title game appearances, while bringing home the 1997 Class I championship – the last in school history. But it wasn’t just the skills he learned from...
Fireworks sure are fun and colorful, but can also be dangerous
What’s the first thing you think of when we say Fourth of July?Well, if we could actually hear you through the newspaper pages (which is an interactive program we are currently developing, mostly to eavesdrop on your private conversations about the Insider), we anticipate things like holiday, barbecue and parades would be said. But in actuality, the word we were looking for is fireworks. Thanks for playing though, and better luck next...
Save energy by hanging clothes outside
Summer is finally here! As we are making summer plans and enjoying fun outings, it’s a great time to consider ways to save on our electric bill. Growing up on a dairy farm, we were always mindful of being frugal – in the summer, this meant putting our clothes out on the line to dry, and canning vegetables. My grandmother didn’t even have a clothes dryer, and in the winter used a clothes rack. Using a clothes line or rack does take a...
This Week In Concord History
June 24, 1993: Residents who use Concord’s buses, pools and libraries pack a public hearing to testify against proposed budget cuts. “I’m a little bit disturbed that the quality of life seems to be attacked every time we talk about budget cuts,” says Richard Croak.June 26, 2003: Matt Bonner, who led the Concord High basketball team to three straight state championships before evolving into a star at the University of Florida, realizes...
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 24 Jun 2014
This photo was taken during the great ivy attack of the mid-1900s, during which several Concord buildings were completely swallowed up by green leafy madness with a taste for brick. Urban legend has it that what we just said is completely fabricated. This is (spoiler alert) the Unitarian Church, but not the one we know today. This church was located on Capitol Street until fire, not man- or building-eating shrubbery, destroyed it....
City briefly
Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell dresses his pet ferrets, Kimball and Jenkins, in their best tuxedos to check out all the great artwork at the school named after them. Thankfully, there’s a city memo left behind in their cage.Fight fire with fireworksOr you could watch themThe city’s annual July 4 celebration will be held at Memorial Field on July 4 (rain date July 5), Aspell writes. How they arrived at the date for an event with...

Producing a plethora of produce places
Not only is June the official start of summer, it’s also the real start to the local produce season. Strawberries are about the first crop harvested, usually around June 10. There are a few types of greens, asparagus and radishes that start a little earlier, but there is nothing as sweet and juicy as a nice ripe New Hampshire strawberry. Right on the heels of those little red gems, broccoli, lettuce and, of course, sweet peas start...
The Food Snob presents the Barley House’s Burgerfest, in photos
The Barley House hosts Burgerfest for eight days every year to help raise money for Fred’s Fund and the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, but the Food Snob likes to think the good folks there host it as a way to get him through the door eight days in a row. Mission accomplished!

‘Monitor’ photo intern Ariana van den Akker bids Concord farewell
What made you decide to pursue photography as a career? The power of a photograph is what drew me to photography. Photographs can do so many things – they can change history, they can expose hidden truths, they can bring you into worlds you may never experience otherwise. What is your favorite/most memorable assignment or photo you’ve taken? From Concord? Definitely when Ray (Duckler) and I went searching for the site of a 1944 plane...
