Ask the Elders: Greatest Invention
Dear Elders, What do you think is the greatest invention of your lifetime? I swore I would never have a microwave in my house, yet for years now I have used one every day. Signed, Cookin' With Waves Jan Stickler Dear Cookin’, Since my time goes back quite a way, I’d have to say sliced bread. Did you ever wonder where the phrase “breaking bread” came from? That is not accidental phrasing. Do you know how difficult it is to butter...
Shout out to the guys
As some of you may have noticed, last week’s scrapbook issue featured only women – not a single scrapbooking male was mentioned. That wasn’t on purpose, we promise, but when Fred Graf and Mike Kappler e-mailed to point out the gender imbalance, we knew we had to make things right. Mike made that really easy for us by responding to the same Q&A that last week’s scrapbookers did. Plus, he even sent us a photo. Thanks, Mike, for...
City Briefly
This is new The what committee? Ever week, City Manager Tom Aspell posts a memo on the city’s website. Here’s the lead item for this week: “Given that no new items for consideration were received this past month, the Poles and Wires Committee meeting, scheduled for Friday, March 27, has been cancelled.” Has anyone ever heard of this committee? Because we haven’t. Maybe there’s a good reason for that. In case you have heard of this...

Concord High students start a youth venture of their own
In 2007, Katie Fox, a student at Concord High School, took a trip to Karatu, Tanzania, with her family. Her grandfather, a retired pilot, had spent some time in Karatu years before, and the village had a special place in his heart: he wanted to share with his family. After meeting villagers and seeing local schools, Fox was able to see firsthand the hardships facing Tanzanian children today, including the lack of desks, school...
Photo of the week
Debbie LaValley sent us this cool photo last week. Here’s what she wrote: “I took it the morning of 3/10. It had snowed the night before and the fog had also frozen on the branches. This is a photo of a blue spruce branch outside our office building.” Way to make the most of the snow that refuses to melt, Debbie!

Do you like ice cream as much as Kevin does?
I like ice cream, and I eat at a lot of it – probably way too much. That should make me somewhat of a connoisseur, but I’d describe it more as being a glutton. However, over time, I have come to greatly appreciate quality ice cream. Interpret this as paying a lot of money for what is labeled “premium.” This appreciation probably comes from being denied quality ice cream as a child. Yep, I lived a poor, deprived childhood. In our...

Crazy things go on in Germany
Karneval, Fasching, Fast Nacht – this German holiday is too big for a single name, so it has three instead. It's even too big for one or two days – it lasts a week! But for the sake of comprehension and brevity, and because of my regional location, I'll call it Fasching, and it will take place on the 16th. I'll give you all a quick background of this end-of-winter fest: Fasching is a mix of a couple...

The program is meant to give teens hands-on experience and instruction in becoming active leaders in their...

Ballet studio puts on a show
Petit Papillon School of Ballet and Ballet Theater of New Hampshire has been in the Concord community for 30 years.
