A spacey place to grab a bite to eat
It’s a bird, it’s a plane . . . no! It’s a jet rocket BLT! If that statement confuses you then you probably haven’t been to the Countdown Café. The café, located inside of the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, 2 Institute Drive, is your typical café in the sense that it serves assorted sandwiches, salads and all that jazz, but it’s unlike any other in Concord due to its fun-to-say space-themed entrees. I imagine it’s the sort of...

These two titles were selected for Concord Reads this year, and there's still plenty of time to hit the books prior to...

Ask the Elders: Moments in history
Dear Elders, What moment in history had the greatest impact on your life? – Wondering Roioli Schweiker Dear Wondering, Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor. Being a teenager during a major war is very different from peacetime. Practically all commodities were in short supply, unlike now when there is plenty of stuff – people just can’t afford it. Apple orchard guide
Because of our fondness for apple crisp and, really, anything made with copious amounts of apples, sugar and cinnamon, we put together a guide to the apple orchards in and around Concord. By around, we mean any town that touches Concord's border. As you can see, you don't have to drive far to get your own handpicked fresh fruit, direct from the source. All of the orchards feature pick-your-own varieties, but if you're...

Apple picking tips and tricks
Our favorite thing about fall is apple picking, so you can imagine how happy we are that area orchards are letting the public loose for pick-your-own fun. Picking your own apples isn't complicated by any means, but during a recent visit to Carter Hill Orchard, we got to thinking: How do you know if an apple is ripe? What's with all those apples on the ground? What happens to the apples on the very top of the tree, where...
