Celebrating the very best of Concord
The Cappies, like Christmas or that day you clean your house, come but once a year, and ready or not, it’s that time again. Of course we get reminders of how great our city is on a daily basis, and this year there were even songs inspired by our annual best-of-the-best awards, like Pharrell’s megasmash, Cappies, featuring the lyrics “Clap along if you feel like the Cappies are the truth.” But the awards are a one-time annual event, so...
Instagram photo of the week – Tue, 20 May 2014
Is it us, or does this photo of the Audi before a performance of Hotel La Putts by Instagram user @zshea have something of a European street feel to it? (It’s usually just us). Perhaps it was just the use of the Europe filter on Instagram and it still needs some refining. Either way, we thought it was a pretty sweet picture.
So fresh and so clean – Tue, 20 May 2014
‘Tis the season for spring cleaning (wait, can we say ‘tis the season if it’s not winter? We hope so, otherwise we’re facing two sanctions already). Thankfully for the Concord Family YMCA, employees of Fidelity Investments stopped by May 7 to jazz up the Child Development Center as part of Fidelity Cares Volunteer Day. The playground and front entrance received a thorough wash, and even the bus got a good scrub in. So when does...
St. Paul’s offering ballet showcase for the tidy sum of zero dollars
If a ballet show takes place on the St. Paul’s School campus and there’s nobody there to see it, does it make a sound? Don’t worry, that’s not a real question. Thankfully it’s nothing we have to worry about (which is good because it doesn’t really make any sense), thanks to Jennifer Howard, director of dance at St. Paul’s, and the St. Paul’s School Ballet Company. The ballet company is launching a spring performance that Howard hopes...

This Week In Concord History
May 20, 1994: A two-alarm fire in the cellar of The Suitcase shop on North Main Street burns a stockroom with inventory and smokes up neighboring stores, particularly Vanderbilt’s Delicatessen. “The smoke was thick enough inside that building that you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face,” says Battalion Chief Chris Pope.May 20, 1983: A crowd of women gather at a public hearing in Concord to describe the sorrows of alimony,...
City briefly
Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell connects a zip line from his office to several downtown restaurants to make his lunch trips easier, and when the public sees him soaring overhead, he’s voted Most Aerodynamic City Manager in the Cappies. Thankfully the fame doesn’t go to his head and he still writes us a city memo.Greeting your publicYour public works, we meanThis week is National Public Works Week, Aspell writes. Shave and a haircut and burgers for a good cause
Burgers and hot dogs are pretty high on the list of things we enjoy (moderation shmoderation). Even higher, though, are great causes like Best Buddies New Hampshire. So you can imagine our excitement when we found out we could experience both passions at the same time pretty soon. Lucky’s Barbershop is hosting a barbecue to raise money for the Best Buddies program, which works to create social change for people with intellectual and...
Finishing is the only option for Barbrie in Spartan Death Race
Adam Barbrie doesn’t really know what to expect when he arrives at the Spartan Death Race next month. That’s because the race’s organizers haven’t told any of the 300 competitors what they will be required to do during a weekend in the woods of the Green Mountains. What Barbrie, a 29-year-old computer network tech at PC Masters, does know is that he must arrive on the afternoon of June 27 with all the supplies he thinks he might need...
