The lip balm results are in!

I am obsessed with lip balm. I keep it in my car, by my bed and in my purse, and if I happen to be caught without it, I run to the nearest drugstore to purchase an emergency replacement. Make your own lip balm!

My favorite lip balm is the one I make myself. It’s so easy! (I don’t sell them, but I do teach classes on how to make them and other goodies.) However, I find the combination of the three oils makes a great consistency. 1 oz. olive oil 1.5 oz. coconut oil 1.5 oz. grapeseed oil...

Ask the Elders: Weight loss

Dear Elders, Do you have a weight problem like I do, or can you eat whatever you want and still not gain a pound? What’s your secret? Signed, The Yankee Bill Twibill Dear Fellow Yankee, Just reading the question put on five pounds around my waist. All I have to do is to smell the cookies or breads in a bakery and the buttons pop from my shirts. So obviously, I have no secret to share except I really do my best never to snack between...

Inventive bird feeder

The Recyclinator would be proud of whoever concocted this bird feeder. Jim Taber, who snapped the photo of our hungry little friend, wrote, “This engineering marvel is a bird feeder made out of an old pretzel jar, sporting a well-fed Northern Mockingbird.” If anyone is interested in making one of these, we’ll volunteer to eat the pretzels.

Bye bye, French fries

I've been talking about getting the interior of my car cleaned since last summer. Even then, my car mats were crusted with decomposing French fries and enough sand from the previous winter to build my own personal beach. Naturally, after leaving the interior untouched for another six months, things just got worse. I actually preferred to drive at night – at least then the dust and crumbs were shrouded in darkness. I knew...

Punks and senior discounts

A few years ago, or maybe it was last month, I'm not sure when, actually, I first encountered the “senior discount.” This discount seemed to coincide with my eligibility for AARP benefits at age 50 and, to my somewhat limited recollection, occurred at a local donut shop. Now, I'm certainly not opposed to fudging on my age, especially when it's to my benefit. This age-fudging started when I was about 12 or 13...

How I like to spend my Fridays: eating cake and pot roast

Colette Farland-Vogt of Horseshoe Pond Place Senior Resource Program kindly invited me to attend Horseshoe Pond's January birthdays celebration on Jan. 16. I accepted the invite faster than she could say “pot roast.” In this economy, I can't turn down a free lunch. Once a month, the folks of Horseshoe Pond Place get together for lunch and cake (with ice cream, of course) to celebrate the month's birthdays....
