Skye Reese dines on Cornell grub and Skype’s her friend’s boyfriend
Concord High School junior Skye Reese spent part of her summer at the Curie Academy of Engineering at Cornell University in Ithica, N.Y., which we thought was awesome, so we caught up with Skye via email now that she’s back in the 603.How did you get connected with the Marie Curie program? My mom actually got me connected to the program. I knew I wanted to do some sort of engineering camp this summer, so my mom went online and...
We like to think of Johann Busch as the local master of reflections
Johann (Hanz) Busch is the latest artist to fill the walls of the NHTI library, displaying a mixture of his digital art and photography. Busch’s work is something that needs to be seen firsthand to truly appreciate, and you’re in luck because the exhibit will be up through Aug. 29.

Corey Mitchell is building a salsa empire right under your noses
If you can read (which we assume all of you can), it won’t be hard to figure out what Corey Mitchell puts in his homemade salsas and dips. He puts the ingredients right on the labels. But Mitchell spent years perfecting his recipes and knows it won’t be easy to replicate his line of Mitchell’s Fresh products. “Anybody can try and copy it, they just won’t have our special touch,” Mitchell said. With a product line that features eight...
We did your back to school shopping for you
Well, we didn’t actually buy you anything. But we did spend the afternoon downtown to prove that you can get just about anything you need from local merchants on Main Street so you can avoid rabid seas of big box shoppers

Instagram photo of the Week – Tue, 19 Aug 2014
Instagram user @unbelievabilly claims he was just riding by Horseshoe Pond when he captured this shot of a magical sunset, but we think that’s just what the aliens who came down on that impossibly straight beam of light programmed him to say after they took him up in their spaceship for awhile. We know you take awesome Instagram photos, too, and we want to see ‘em – just tag us with #concordinsider when you post.
You didn’t think we’d duck the ALS ice bucket challenge, did you?
We love a good challenge. Whether it has to do with eating large quantities of food in a short amount of time, playing an NBA legend in H or trying to recreate a semi-famous painting, we’re always down to try something new.So when our phones fell silent last week (since none of you called), we decided to issue the ALS ice bucket challenge to ourselves. Because let’s be completely honest here folks, how can you say no to getting doused...

For Joe Ossoff, spending the summer in the N-Y-C was as easy as 1-2-3
When school gets out for summer break, most kids run fast and away, dreading the return to mind-numbing science and math classes. They go to the beach, seek gainful employment or spend time with their friends. You also probably wouldn’t be surprised to learn that they spend their time binge watching Netflix. But, you might be surprised to learn that some students actually stay in school. No, we don’t mean “I failed freshman biology”...
Mary Chagnon crosses ‘operate heavy machinery’ off her bucket list
Most people’s bucket list doesn’t include an actual bucket. Not so for Mary Chagnon, a resident at Havenwood Heritage Heights who at 86 years young jumped into an excavator and dumped a couple bucket loads of dirt on the ground Friday morning. Chagnon was playing bridge with a friend not too long ago when she overheard the construction taking place as part of the community’s expansion project, and it lit something of a fire under her....
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 19 Aug 2014
We’re going back to school and old school at the same time with this photo. Hopefully that doesn’t mean we have twice as much homework! Reader Earl Burroughs tells us this is Cogswell Kindergarten, which has since been replaced at the same location by the fire station at the corner of Broadway and West Street. We don’t know exactly how old the photo is, but it’s definitely older than the coffee stain in the corner.
City briefly

Unfortunately, the department is not on Tinder yet, as far as we...
You should be mindful of this Capital Area Wellness Coalition column
Those of us of a certain age grew up with the short story of Walter Mitty as eighth grade required reading. Do you remember? He was that hapless dreamer in James Thurber’s short story who spent most of his time escaping into fantasies of glory and adventure. Every now and then, something would snap him out of his mental travels, bringing him back to the there-and-then of his 1930s life. For those of you who never watched Father Knows...
