Everyone walks for the animals with the SPCA – including the animals
The Pope Memorial SPCA held its annual Walk for the Animals on Sunday at Northeast Delta Dental, with two different walking courses and a host of vendors and other entertainment. We’d make a dog pun here, but we’d rather just tell you how much of a treat it was to be there. The Pope Memorial SPCA held its annual Walk for the Animals on Sunday at Northeast Delta Dental, with two different walking courses and a host of vendors and other...

Concord’s Rachel Vogelzang can’t wait to share her first CD with you
You can keep sharing sepia-toned photos of your tacos with hundreds of your closest Facebook followers if you want to. But Concord musician Rachel Vogelzang is waiting for the moment she gets to share the culmination of years of hard work. Vogelzang’s first studio CD, Blocks, is set for a Nov. 1 release, with a Sept. 30 digital prelease to people who have pledged through her PledgeMusic campaign (more on that later). How long it has...
Get Your Rear In Gear is the perfect excuse to write ‘inflatable colon’
Some things are just bound to catch the Insider’s attention. Like the words “inflatable colon.” We can’t really imagine a scenario in which that wouldn’t immediately perk our ears up, but it’s especially effective when connected to a charitable event built on collaboration with tons of Concord people and organizations. That’s how the first Get Your Rear in Gear 5K Run/Walk, put on by the New Hampshire Public Health Association, wound...
It's on, Hooksett – Tue, 16 Sep 2014
September is Library Card Sign Up Month, which is much more fun with a little friendly rivarly. That’s why the Concord Public Library is challenging its Hooksett brethren to see who can generate the most sign-ups before the month is out. (Hooksett purges its cards that haven’t been used for three years and Concord doesn’t, so anyone in Concord with a card that hasn’t been used in three years will count as a new sign-up.) The above...

In this week’s episode of Behind the Scenes at the Concord Insider, we show you the place where all letters to the editor wind up. We’re kidding: PLEASE SEND US LETTERS. Actually, we can thank Instagram user @miamarsh73 for this super cool basement shot.

Walking a mile in the governor’s shoes?
Not only is New Hampshire’s First Gentleman, Tom Hassan, suiting up for the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event, but so are at least 100 others – and that number will expand by Oct. 1 when the walk kicks off. If that is not enough, some great local entrepreneurs challenge you to step in and step out with these generous motivators. Three Main Street shoe stores and a hair salon want you to Walk A Mile In Her Shoes. We all need to band...
We checked out a different kind of fall fling at Beaver Meadow
The sport of FlingGolf came to Beaver Meadow Golf Course for a demonstration Sunday morning. The game, in which players fling a golf ball using a stick similar in design to a lacrosse stick, is played on traditional golf courses. Alex Van Alen conceived the sport in Massachusetts and is showcasing it across the country. Spoiler alert: we dug it! Stay tuned next week for a first-hand account of our first official round.

Classic Concord photo – Tue, 16 Sep 2014
Pop quiz, everyone: This is a picture of A) the foyer in Tom Aspell’s City Manager lair; B) The hallowed house of Concord marble busts or C) the main entrance to the New Hampshire Historical Society Building. Trick question: it’s all of the above! Thanks to reader Earl Burroughs for the photo.
City briefly
Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell spends hours researching and building a costume that will allow him to become the world’s first flying city manager. Only after he climbs to the roof of the State House does he realize he’s built a gorilla suit by mistake. Dejected, he heads to the forest to live with his fellow primates, stamping out a city memo with his oversized footprints.Moving right alongMain St. preps startingThis week, those...
