John Steiner wants to pick Benjamin Franklin’s brain on brews
Name: Jon SteinerBartender, Penuche’sHow long have you been a bartender?I’ve been here for about 14 years at the end of this month. I worked in special ed before that. How did you get into the profession?I’ve always been more of a night person than a day person. A 9-to-5 in a cube never really interested me at all. Bartending is kind of like being at the party but not participating in the party. It’s a responsible way to participate in...

There’s a new grammar sheriff in town
This week’s grammar report comes from a sentence written by the Film Snob. In his article, “The (worst) movies of 2012,” this sentence made me both smile and furrow my brow; it contained a “forte” and a “foible.” The “forte” was the creativeness and word plays in the Film Snob’s description of the movie Wanderlust. He wrote, “I really identified with the characters, in that I found myself wandering out of the theater about 45...
These bowls are full of hope
Parker Academy students raised $1,500 for the Friendly Kitchen at last week's Empty Bowls fundraiser.
Take those cakes and beat it
The Concord Police Department was kind enough to share its collection of old logbooks from the early 20th century with us. We think it’s a fascinating look into the daily operations of the CPD way back when.Jan. 5, 1940: Called to Thirty Pines to take out a drunk. When I got there, he was gone. Was over to Piekerman’s home, #3 Borough Road. He is Piekerman’s step-father. He had taken some cakes off the counter and beat it.Feb. 25,...

Einstein’s theory of relationship-tivity
Here at the Insider, we often find ourselves combing through Craigslist’s Missed Connections to find out if anyone has been staring at us from their window while we jog in spandex found true love online. We pluck out some of the more interesting entries and present them here (unedited, of course – that’s half the fun!). Without further ado, here are Concord’s Missed Connections.Einstein Bagels – m4wIt was Sunday just before 2:00 pm....
Miriam Hill has hobnobbed with presidents, popes and penguins
Miriam Hill has never passed up an opportunity for adventure. Consider that a trip to Antarctica to celebrate her 90th birthday in 2007 barely touches the tip (pun alert) of the iceberg in terms of remarkable things she’s seen and done.“It’s always been my theory to go anywhere that you have the chance to go,” Hill said. She certainly has. She has crossed paths with penguins to start her ninth decade, rubbed elbows with two popes, the...
Meet the Concord Public Library’s resident puppet master
Name: Pam StauffacherLibrarian, Concord Public LibraryHow long have you been a librarian? How did you get started in the field?I’ve been working in libraries for about 15 years. We volunteered at the Concord Homeless Resource Center – and loved it!
The thermometer read just above freezing. Chilling rain and snow fell diagonally, buffeted by heavy winds. On days like these, I always try to spend as little time as possible in the unforgiving out-of-doors. Think for a moment, however, about that slice of Concord’s population that has access to little respite from stormy, frigid weather – our city’s homeless. Many of those who stay outside are just like anyone else: they’d prefer...
