Take a nice staycation right here in Concord
Now that we’re in the thick of the summer, many of you are probably thinking about vacation – Tim, for one, certainly is. But maybe you don’t feel like spending a ton of time and money jet-setting all over the place. Maybe you’re just kind of looking to hang out around here and relax a little bit. That’s the kind of thing we like to do, too. That’s why we’ve assembled the Staycation Issue, full of all kinds of fun and easy things to...
Staycation options for Concord
As you probably saw, we had a good time planning out our “Staycation” in Concord. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to actually do it all because we have a limited budget (like $0) and had lots of other things to get done over the course of a short week other than having a good time. We know, we don’t think it’s fair either. But nonetheless that’s the reality we were faced with, but we sure didn’t let that keep us from having fun...
We gave Megan her first official assignment
Just over a week on the job and I receive my first assignment. With very little time to get from my summer job (the one I actually get paid for) to the first of three photo shoots, I was darting from one thing to another. My first stop on my first solo adventure was the Contoocook River Canoe Company. I pull into the driveway trying to catch the canoeing group before they finish for the day, so I hop out of my car and make my way up...
Thomsons complete cross-country journey
Derek and Dylan Thomson spent 46 days this summer riding their bikes across the country for the Connolly Tough Fund. During the 4,500-mile journey, the Concord brothers raised about $25,000 for former Concord High School principal Gene Connolly doing what they called Cycling the US For ALS. The Thomsons began their journey on May 23 in San Francisco and finished the long and arduous ride Saturday with a final leg on their bikes –...
Go Try It: Get the full gaming experience at Wal-Mart
If you’ve ever set out looking for some hard-core gaming in Concord, chances are you’ve likely had some trouble. For all of the great things Concord has, the city is decidedly light on arcades. There is, however, a pretty legit gaming center inside Wal-Mart. It’s right near the front of the store, next to the self-checkout area, and there are several classic arcade-style games inside. I went first for the “Fast and Furious Super...
Veterans spend a day on the field of Fenway Park
On July 1, nearly 30 New England veterans took part in the CVS Health Baseball Camp for Veterans at Fenway Park. And two of those veterans, U.S. Marine Corps and Army veteran Derek Reiss and U.S. Army veteran Greg Card, are from Concord. They took a few swings at the Green Monster, enjoyed a VIP tour of the park and got tickets to that night’s game.
Check out this new barber shop in Concord
Every guy has to get his hair cut sooner or later. It’s just one of those things in life that most of us would rather leave to the pros. If you live in Concord, there’s no shortage of places to get a new ‘do – the city is practically the hair-cutting capital of New England. Apparently we’re pretty serious about our locks around here. That’s why it’s never a bad idea to open a new barber shop, and that’s exactly what Dylan Ames and...
Concord is pretty great, but we have a few ideas to make it even cooler
As you’ve probably figured out during your time living here or reading the Insider each and every week, there’s a lot going on in Concord. We outlined a lot of the things that make the capital city a great place to visit – or staycation in – over the previous few pages. But like most destinations, Concord isn’t perfect and there’s definitely some things that would make it an even greater hot spot for people to come to. It’s nothing...

Tasty Brews Hoptical Illusion
It had been a while since the Insider pulled up a stool at the Red Blazer Peanut Pub. So last week, we took a little time at the end of a work day to see what “The Blazer” had on tap. Purely in the name of Insider Tasty Brew science, of course. And with more than 30 tapped brews to choose from, it’s not an easy decision. Like we’ve said in the past, we like hops and we only assume a large percentage of you do too. So if we see an IPA...
Digger and Henry are quite the team
Digger the Tiger, the Main Street construction mascot, and none other than the very famous Henry from McGowan Fine Art, joined forces to oversee recent construction work on Hills Ave. With this duo on the job, the people of Concord were safe to pass through the downtown side street.
We never knew you could be addicted to art
In the past few months, artists have brought in a lot of fresh work that hadn’t found a spot in previous shows at McGowan Fine Art. So the staff had an idea to put it all together in one varying exhibit entitled, “Hello, My Name Is . . . Addicted to Art.” It features the art that got the staff excited, while providing an opportunity to tell the audience why the art deserves a second look. The McGowan staff, select collectors and...
Keep Concord beautiful with adopt-a-spot
We all want Concord to look beautiful. And that’s probably why the city crews do what they do on a daily basis to make it an attractive place to live and visit. But they can’t do it alone. There’s traffic islands and cul-de-sacs, mulch beds and sitting areas allover the city that need your help. And the adopt-a-spot program is exactly the way you can do your part. “It became the responsibility of the parks department, grounds...

Check out this cool photo we found on Instagram
Instagram user @_.amandaj._ snapped this shot of a boy – presumably her son – playing in the fountain at Bicentennial Square. Now there’s a kid who knows how to have a staycation. If you’ve taken a cool photo that you’d like to see run in the Insider, post it to instagram with the tag #concordnh or tag us specifically with #concordinsider. Who knows, we might be just the big break you’ve been waiting for.
