THE ULTIMATE

People of Concord, there's something you should know: There are extremists living among us. And they’re armed with Frisbees. Twice a week, a dozen or so athletes take to the fields of Reed Park for a little sport called ulimate Frisbee. It’s pretty similar to regular Frisbee, but, like, 10 times more intense (as you’ll see in these great photos taken by our friend, Ben Kimball). Interested in playing? The crew meets on Mondays...

Durgin silver

Durgin silver is famous for its high quality and intricate designs. The Concord-based Durgin Silver Company was founded in 1853 by William Butler Durgin, a Rhode Island native. Despite During’s meager funds, he produced sterling flatware and hollowware that’s now considered priceless in the industry. When During died in 1905, the company was sold to a Providence, R.I., company and became known as “The Durgin Division of...

New Hampshire State Prison painting

This painting of the former New Hampshire State Prison was made in 1850 by local artist Henry P. Moore. The piece, being held in storage at the New Hampshire Historical Society, is one of the few images of the prison from the period, according to Wes Balla, the society’s director of collections and exhibitions. Before the prison was moved to its current location in 1880, it sat on the corner of North State and Tremont streets, which...

Talk about awesome. This mahogany Chippendale tall clock was made right here in the city sometime around 1800 at famed clockmaker Asa Kimball’s shop. The clock, which is signed by its maker, Tim O’Chandler, was exhibited at the New Hampshire Historical Society’s furniture exhibition in 1978 and is featured in the society’s catalog of the exhibition, Plain & Elegant, Rich & Common. We’re not sure how much it’s worth, but...

Shaker spinning wheel

Last year, Concord resident and jewelry maker Kythryne Aisling bought this Shaker spinning wheel from Hilltop Consignments in Pembroke. According to Aisling, the wheel was built at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker community in Maine sometime between 1806 and 1814. Certain indicators helped narrow down the date. For example, the bearings where made from copper pennies – a practice that was done before 1860 and the wheel was initialed by a...

City briefly

Is it Christmas? New officers, extra-long weekly memo Last Friday, City Manager Tom Aspell sent out his weekly memo and we got quite the pleasant surprise. Eyes locked on the computer screen, we eagerly read every word for two entire pages. Satisfied, we went to click out of the document, but something caught our eye. “What’s this?” we said, our voice quivering with excitement. “Is there a third page to Tom’s memo?” We scrolled down,...

How your city trails stay so beautifully kempt

This week, Nature 101's Paul Basham finds out who's responsible for maintaining the city's trail system. Who maintains and grooms the hiking trails of Concord? This question was partly answered for me when I was hiking a trail in the area of Broken Ground School and came upon a group of seven people working to improve the trail. Led by forester Ron Klemarczyk, who maintains the city's trails, the group included Abe...

The late, great

There's got to be a good reason why Albemarle Cady (1807-1888) is buried under one of the tallest grave stones in Old North Cemetery. Could it be the grizzly white beard he sported for so many years? Or should we point to his military achievements? Most historians would go with the latter, but sometimes you can't beat a rugged beard. The Keene native was all business during his 30 years in uniform. Cady graduated from West...
