This week in Concord history
March 10, 2000: A 7-year-old boy crossing Loudon Road on his way to Concord’s Dame School is struck by a pickup truck and seriously injured. The accident inspires residents of the Heights to press city officials for better traffic signals and more clearly marked crosswalks.March 10, 1991: A funeral tribute is held at the Monitor for former editor Tom W. Gerber, who died Feb. 22. Steve Winship, Gerber’s old friend and fellow Dartmouth...
Kids made all this stuff, and it’s awesome
It’s Youth Art Month and like every other year, the Concord School District is celebrating by hosting a student art exhibit at Steeplegate Mall. Through April 15, over 1,100 pieces will be on display in what was a vacant retail space across from Tutti Frutti near the Bon-Ton entrance.

You don’t want to miss the Rotary Club’s annual musical extravaganza
We love variety. For instance, we like pork tacos, chicken tacos, beef tacos . . . you get the idea. Now if only someone would think to make an entire show about variety. Wait, what’s that? That kind of show has been happening for literally thousands of years, dating back to the cavemen? Oh, yeah, we knew that. The Concord Rotary Club apparently knows that, too, because it is back with its annual super fun extravaganza. We’ll let the...
Tim gets hands on (and hands in) with art at No Brushes Allowed
On most days, my artistic ability falls somewhere between one and two on a scale to whatever number you’d like to choose. Maybe it could reach a three if sketching trees happens to be on the activity checklist, although some may say that’s a bit of a stretch. But when I made my way to No Brushes Allowed in the Concord Community Arts Center this weekend, it’s as if I found a place where I belong when it comes to the artistic world....

Buy artwork made by famous Concord peeps at the Intown auction
Remember last year when Intown Concord somehow talked Keith into making a painting for its annual Locally Famous Art Auction? Yeah, we’ve pretty much repressed that memory, too. Well don’t worry, you won’t be distracted by any attempts at Insider-staff created paintings this year. But you can see some pretty great stuff from a bunch of other Concord celebrities! March 19, Intown Concord and its board of directors invites downtown...
Instagram photo of the week – Tue, 10 Mar 2015
This picture from Instagram user @hayleymccartire is a pretty solid illustration of a simple economics lesson: Supply has clearly surpassed demand for the snow shopping demographic. So much so that entire carts are being abandoned, mid-quest!
Buy artwork made by famous Concord peeps at the Intown auction
Guests at Intown Concord’s Annual Meeting and Locally Famous Art Auction will have the chance to check out these works, and maybe bring them home at the end of the night (the paintings we’re talking about, not the people).
We asked for the best icicles in Concord and did you ever deliver
With large chunks of frozen water hanging from just about every building in the city, we asked you to send us some cool pics to share. And now we have proof that at least some people read our stuff because we got quite a selection of Concord’s coolest icicles. As you can see, we kept our word and put some of them on these pages.

Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 10 Mar 2015
If you were thinking to yourself, you know, those barrels outside the building look like the kind we had in 1864, you’d be absolutely right! This is the corner of North Main and Pleasant streets, circa ’64, outside of Hardy & Hoit, dealers in “goods and groceries,” according to the caption on this photo from reader Earl Burroughs, which included flour, corn, pork and lard – hot commodities all back in the day. That’s probably how...
City Briefly
Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell dunks his entire head in a bucket of plaster so he can make a mask of his own face. He gets lost in thought trying to decide if the dress is gold and white or black and blue, though, and by the time he tries to remove his head, the plaster has hardened, forcing him to wear the bucket as a hat. When his staff smashes the plaster to free him, the tiny pieces spell out a city memo!Find a leak and win...

The Barley House surprised owner Brian Shea, and he hugged people
The Barley House is turning 15 this year (that means it can drive soon!), and as part of the celebration, the staff threw owner Brian Shea a suprise party Friday night, inviting all sorts of people he knows, This-Is-Your-Life style. And you know what? This really IS Shea’s life. Weird! He appeared genuinely surprised to see everyone, so we’d say the plan worked. Also, there was cake. That’s always an important detail.
