A wedding without the hassle
Sure, weddings are fun and all, but when you factor in slim pickings on the registry, your wacky uncle and sitting in uncomfortable church pews for an hour-long ceremony, you’ll soon be wishing you were at another party. The clever folks at the musical group Performers Who Care came up with a fundraising idea that addresses these concerns. It’s called the Unwedding. Among other things, the group points out that this is the perfect...
A bold move
When I moved to Concord two and a half years ago, my frugal homing sense led me directly to Freihofer's Bakery Outlet. I was thrilled to get my bread at a discount, not to mention my bagels, English muffins, and other carbohydrate indulgences. My experience got even better when I saw the store promoting reusable bags. They offered their own for a reasonable price of 99 cents and, for a time, gave them away with a store purchase....

This picture, from the collection of antiquarian Earl Burroughs, shows the streetcars at the intersection of Main and Pleasant streets in the 1890s. This might not even have been Concord's first traffic jam; 19th-century memoirs say that Main...

Fire department museum
Concord is home to many great museums and historic sites – the Museum of New Hampshire History, the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center and the Pierce Manse come to mind – but did you know that the fire department has its own museum? It's actually been around for a while, though we only found out about it a month ago when an anonymous caller suggested we check it out. Firefighter Jim Cournoyer is the unofficial...
