Classic Concord photo – Tue, 08 Oct 2013

Faithful reader Earl Burroughs sent us this photo of several teams from the first ever twilight softball league in the United States in July of 1908. Good to know that even back then, there was always at least one dude willing to subscribe to the “sun’s out, guns out” mantra. Sweet tank, fourth dude from the right! Fun fact: softball uniforms in 1908 were apparently the same uniforms worn to work. And everything else.

The Food Snob: Honestly, you had us at fresh doughnuts

Autumn is here, and with it comes all the signs of the change of season. The leaves are a bright blaze orange, there’s a nip in the air, the days are getting shorter and shorter and restaurants are changing their names! Go-to summertime eatery Summer Freeze has been rebranded for the autumn months as Fall Freeze, and the menu has been revamped to reflect that transition. Gone is the standard fried fare; in its place you’ll find fresh...

Handing it off

The answers to last week’s scavenger hunt may remain a mystery, but the theme no longer has to: our beloved editor, Ben Conant, has taken a job as the sports editor at the Monadnock Ledger Transcript in Peterborough. Alas, the farewell noted in the hunt was his. He took the Insider to great heights in his two years as editor, and as his last gift to Concord brings you this picture of him holding a Nerf football outside of the State...

Lake Bell’s triple-threat debut brings laughs

“It’s a man’s world.” When James Brown penned that lyric, he might well have been talking about the ultra-competitive, hyper-masculine world of movie trailer voiceovers. In A World is the directorial debut from Lake Bell (Children’s Hospital), who also wrote and starred in the film. Bell plays Carol Solomon, an aspiring voiceover pro struggling to escape her famous father’s shadow. She shows equal aptitude behind the camera and in...
