Hot on the trail – Tue, 06 May 2014
What do you do when a reader reports a moose on the train tracks outside your office? You go moose huntin’! Here Keith perfects the technique employed by decades of hunters. What he didn’t perfect, though, was actually seeing a moose. Bummer, dude.

Leave a bag of food for the mailman and help people
Typically, if you were to give your letter carrier some food, he or she would probably eat it (or politely take it and immediately throw it away out of fear you are trying to poison them). This weekend, though, you have the opportunity to hand your letter carrier a bag of non-perishable food and help a handful of those in need at the same time. The annual Letter Carriers Food Drive, run by the Granite United Way in cooperation with...

Say hello to Steve Leone as he moonwalks his way into our community
Name: Steve LeoneOccupation: Concord Monitor News EditorWhat do you enjoy most about working at the Monitor? What made you want to come to the capital city?I’ve always thought a newsroom is a pretty exciting place to be. I’m not sure there’s a better way to get to know a community than to be immersed in its events and happenings seven days a week. Coming here was a big decision for my family. The paper certainly has a national...

It’s outdoors, I like that, and it’s puzzle solving, and I...

Instagram photo of the week – Tue, 06 May 2014
It appears Henry, the beloved dog on staff at McGowan Fine Art, has let his new celebrity (he WAS featured as a business dog of Concord in the Insider, after all) go to his adorable, furry little head. He apparently locked Sarah and Amanda up in the closet and tried to run the gallery himself this week. How do we know? We bought a Picasso original for two broken dog treats and a belly rub. Score!
We dig deep to bring you subterranean Concord
We love to dig stuff up. It stems from our days in the ol’ sandbox when making a mess with dirt during the day was acceptable. Unfortunately that’s not the case anymore, because for some reason, doing it in an office setting is frowned upon (this is a policy we’ve worked hard to change). That’s why our push for work place recess is so important, but that’s a story for another day. So when we got invited to the N.H. Division of...
This Week In Concord History
May 6, 2003: An elderly man whom California authorities called the Love Bandit is arrested in Concord after being on the run for four years. Officials says the Richard Garcia, 71, preyed on widows over the age of 65, using his dancing skills to woo his way into their bank accounts. His preferred venues, officials said, were senior dances.May 6, 2002: The cities of Concord, Laconia and Somersworth are chosen to become New Hampshire...
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 06 May 2014
Lending credence to the notion that each week’s copy of the Insider is truly on fire, it turns out paper is flammable. At least we’re presuming that’s what caused this fire at the Rumford Press on North Main Street on June 23, 1921. Of course, it could have been an electric fire started when all the employees’ laptop batteries got too hot, but we’d only be speculating on that one.
City briefly
Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell digs a hole and puts a city memo in it. Then he invites an audience, digs it up, proclaims it to be prehistoric and reads it aloud. The happy coupleCity partners with designerThe city has engaged a design team led by the H.L. Turner Group for the new citywide community center, Aspell writes. The engagement featured a modest ring and a classic proposal on the State House steps.Turner has partnered with...
Dog days of still winter – Tue, 06 May 2014
Our business dogs made it all the way down to Hamilton, Bermuda, thanks to Alex and Susan De Nesnera, who shapped this palm-frondy photo that reminds us it is actually sunny and nice somewhere.
Show and tell got real when a chicken came to Christa McAuliffe School

Spy some hot local looks and bid on a bunch of stuff
We’ll admit it, couture is not a word we use often (our style is more top-of-the-laundry-pile chic). So we’re excited to expand our vocabulary and remind you to check out Couture For A Cause, a fashion show fundraiser that’s a collaboration between Womenade of Concord and several local businesses, May 8 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at O Steak and Seafood. Support those in need in the surrounding Concord area while viewing the latest...

Tim steps out of his comfort zone and takes another one closer to fame
So one day last week, someone described my singing ability as super advanced. While I would agree that my vocal pipes are above average, that kind of claim can put a lot of pressure on a person. Especially one whose best work is done in the confines of my own home, where only my wife and cats have to listen to it. But this wasn’t just some rando on the street or person listening outside my bathroom window. This was an actual vocal...

Perrenial Exchange at the Audi this weekend
It’s our perennial May predicament . . . how to turn a patch of brown mud into a bed of glorious blooms. Then, with a 90-day growing season, how to jump start the gardens and keep them blooming until our pumpkins get frosted once again. Lucky Concord gardeners get a perennial solution – the Perennial Exchange – as the city’s General Services Department and The Friends of the Audi turn the first spade every Mothers Day Saturday. On May...
