Have some compassion for the parsnip

If you’re like many people, you don’t think much about parsnips. You may hardly ever eat them. Don’t let lack of understanding prevent you from getting to know this sturdy, starchy old staple of a vegetable. The thought of any vegetable disappearing into oblivion is just plain sad, yet vegetable varieties are slipping away from us at an alarming rate. According to the Center for Biopersity and Conservation, almost 96 percent of the...

Once he gets there, he takes a moment to thank his lucky stars that we were around to redesign Main Street. Then, he dashes off another brilliant city memo and sends it over to us via penny-farthing messenger.but winter is cold...

Evidently she and her boyfriend disagree on when to use a comma in a series before the word “and.” The Grammarmatrix is happy to clarify and perhaps curtail this quarrel. The comma is a mark of separation and one of its duties is to pide items in a series. It’s a useful punctuation mark but often misused. The rule with three or...

Martial arts master reaches milestone

The resume of Matt Brown’s martial arts mentor reads something like a modern-day tough-guy manual.George Dillman has worked closely with Bruce Lee, hung with Chuck Norris, owned two cougars, wrestled a bear and currently owns Muhammad Ali’s training facility in Pennsylvania. He can also knock you out by simply tapping the underside of your jaw. Sound like a gimmick? Brown thought so, too, until he challenged Dillman at their first...

Classic Concord photo – Tue, 04 Dec 2012

A couple of turn-of-the-century Casey Joneses found themselves in a bit of a pickle back in the day. We don’t know much more about this train crash photo, but we’re guessing it’s a shot of the 1910 cattle car crash that killed 13 calves and a cow.
