That park is smoking hot – Tue, 03 Dec 2013
It appears as if Bill Jewell took a wrong turn doing our last scavenger hunt and wound up in Hawaii. Sorry, Bill, we’ll try to be more clear with the clues! But we hope you had fun anyway! We can’t stop using exclamation points! I pulled the lever on the machine but the Clark bar didn’t come out!
Annual ski and skate sale has something for every winter athlete
It’s just about that time of year to dust off those old skis and boots and hit the slopes. The Winter Olympics are a mere few months away and you never know when the call will come in for you to fill that empty roster spot on the U.S. Ski Team. Wait, what’s that you say? You are bored with what you have and are in serious need of an upgrade for the 2014 season? We hear you. There is nothing worse than showing up at the old mountain...
Shop downtown Concord ’til you drop – or at least until midnight
For your holiday entertainment, you could track down the latest viral video of a shopping brawl at the big box store, or you could make plans to visit downtown Concord on Dec. 6 for the annual Midnight Merriment celebration. Be advised, one of those two options features decidedly more black eyes. We recommend selecting Intown Concord’s Midnight Merriment, the night when downtown Concord is aglow with shopping and dining and general...
Kimball-Jenkins Estate fulfilling family vision to support local artists
Carolyn Jenkins had a vision for her family’s downtown Concord estate. Having spent much of her life engulfed in one area of the art world or another, Jenkins wanted her family’s legacy to provide an avenue for others to pursue the arts. It’s why she left the estate to a nonprofit trust with specific instructions to be used for cultural and educational purposes, including the enrichment of the arts. And would she ever be pleased to...
Instagram photo of the week – Tue, 03 Dec 2013
Welp, it looks like it’s the time of year when it snows and then there is snow on the ground for the next 10 months or so. But it’s not the time of year where we are grumpy about it yet! So thanks to Instagram user @megnutty for taking this picture o snow at its prettiest, dusting a scenic walkway.
Capital Region Food Program turns 40 – Tue, 03 Dec 2013

It is, however, entering its busiest stretch of the year with its annual Holiday Food Basket program, which has donated more than 2,800 tons of food. A small percentage of those tons is being packed above by diligent volunteers. For more information, visit...
This Week In Concord History
Dec. 3, 2002: The Chico Enterprise-Record, a California newspaper, reports that Andrew Mickel’s parents turned him in to the police after he called them and bragged about shooting a Red Bluff, Calif., police officer Nov. 19. Mickel was arrested a week later when he surrendered to the Concord police and FBI agents after a 2½-hour standoff at the Holiday Inn on North Main Street.Dec. 3, 1847: For $1,000, Edward H. Rollins buys R.C....
CMS students donate an awful lot of food
Students at the Christa McAuliffe School had to do some heavy lifting Tuesday afternoon, and it was all their fault. After all, they were the ones who filled the dozens of cardboard boxes with food to be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. A food drive run by the CMS student council was a tremendous success, as several thousand items were collected in less than a month. The hallway just inside the door of the school was...
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 03 Dec 2013
Reader Earl Burroughs sent us this classic Concord photo of buildings between Pleasant and Warren Street, circa a bunch of years ago (note: era approximate). And my how times have changed – you just can’t find good places to get varnishes, phosphate and tinware downtown these days.
City Briefly

Oh, and a city memo.Let there be tree lightTime to plug in the pineThe Penacook Village Association is hosting the...

Business booms for Blake’s, but family remains first and foremost
The sign as you pull in the driveway reads Blake’s Turkey Farm. It is older, and the green paint around the edge has faded, most notably in the lower right corner where the show of wood is encroaching on the M in farm. The colorful bird in the middle is weathered, but still looks good for a sign that has been hanging for decades. Yet the sign is a bit misleading. The name of the business has changed to Blake’s All Natural Foods, and...
