Raining on our parade – Tue, 10 Dec 2013
Margaret Porter said she thought about leaving the Insider on the Queen’s doorstep at Buckingham Palace, but it was too rainy. Don’t worry, Margaret, she had probably already read it. She’s a big fan!

This sweet and rather timely photo was snapped by Instagram user @bettieplague. We like to call it, “What Christmas lights look like after six or seven eggnogs at dinner.”
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 10 Dec 2013
This was our proposal for the Main Street redesign, but for some reason the powers that be weren’t into dirt roads and buggies, even when we conceded on the issue of buggy parking meters. We were just trying to kick it old school. We thought retro was in! Anyway, this photo from reader Earl Burroughs looking north on Main Street from a long, long time ago will have to do instead.
That park is smoking hot – Tue, 03 Dec 2013
It appears as if Bill Jewell took a wrong turn doing our last scavenger hunt and wound up in Hawaii. Sorry, Bill, we’ll try to be more clear with the clues! But we hope you had fun anyway! We can’t stop using exclamation points! I pulled the lever on the machine but the Clark bar didn’t come out!

Welp, it looks like it’s the time of year when it snows and then there is snow on the ground for the next 10 months or so. But it’s not the time of year where we are grumpy about it yet! So thanks to Instagram user @megnutty for taking this picture o snow at its prettiest, dusting a scenic walkway.
Capital Region Food Program turns 40 – Tue, 03 Dec 2013
We were going to throw the Capital Region Food Program a surprise party for its 40th birthday this month, but it turns out it’s not really a tangible entity. It is, however, entering its busiest stretch of the year with its annual Holiday Food Basket program, which has donated more than 2,800 tons of food. A small percentage of those tons is being packed above by diligent volunteers. For more information, visit...
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 03 Dec 2013
Reader Earl Burroughs sent us this classic Concord photo of buildings between Pleasant and Warren Street, circa a bunch of years ago (note: era approximate). And my how times have changed – you just can’t find good places to get varnishes, phosphate and tinware downtown these days.
The Hunk vs. the Volcano – Tue, 26 Nov 2013
Abby Jones and husband, 2012 Insider hunk Bob Jones, brought the Insider with them on their honeymoon to Costa Rica. This picture was taken at the Arsenal Volcano, which Abby assures us hasn’t erupted since 1968. Of course, it hasn’t had an official Insider hunk standing in front of it since then, either.

Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 26 Nov 2013
In honor of the Concord High School football team’s 42-14 victory over Pinkerton in the Division I state championship game on Saturday, we thought we’d dust off this picture of the 1910 CHS team, courtesy of reader Earl Burroughs. What this group lacked in overall athleticism compared to the 2013 squad, it more than made up for in awesome button-up sweaters and matching slicked-back hair. Roll Tide!
Where the Insider goes – Tue, 19 Nov 2013
Eugene Cote, Marie Cote, Genevieve LeBrun and George LeBrun took the Insider to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Merci beaucoup!
Say it ain't snow – Tue, 19 Nov 2013
Imagine our surprise when, cruising down Mountain Road early last week, we discovered this mysterious pile of what appears to be snow on somebody’s front lawn. Funny thing is, we can’t recall it snowing around here in the last several hundred days, and there wasn’t a spot of the white stuff on anyone else’s lawn in the area (just peep the barren background here). Several days later, the pile was still there. We are left to assume that...

This week’s classic Concord photo comes to us from faithful reader – and WKXL radio host – Paul Brogan, and features a challenge for all of you local Concord historians. The photo depicts the giant spire that used to stand outside the Unitarian Universalist Church on Pleasant Street, a spire that vanished some time ago. Brogan said he’d heard various tales of its disappearance, including those who claim it blew away in a wind storm,...
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 05 Nov 2013
Here we have proof that traffic is not a new phenomenon in downtown Concord, though there is admittedly less horse and buggy congestion these days. This photo, courtesy of faithful reader Earl Burroughs, shows Low Avenue in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Some artifacts live on to this day: note the Thompson and Hoague building in the background, featured most recently in our latest scavenger hunt.

Well, isn’t this embarassing – it looks like everyone wore the exact same outfit to the laying of the cornerstone at the YMCA on Nov. 17, 1904. Little known fact illustrated above: The YMCA was built directly to the right of the installation known as the sea of dismembered heads. Thanks to reader Earl Burroughs for the pic.
