You got that right – Tue, 28 Jan 2014
It’s this time of year that White Park really earns its name. Just ask the crew in this photo, which was out dutifully clearing snow off the pond even as it continued to fall from the sky on the morning of Jan 19. Thanks to Larry Levinson for snapping the photo and sending it in. And park-naming people, whaddya say next time we go with Palm Tree Park or something, eh?
Dubai Dubie Do – Tue, 28 Jan 2014
Faithful reader Julia Gunnison, a student at Johns Hopkins University, recently spent the holidays in the United Arab Emirates. Here she is in front of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. How tall is it? Taller than two stacks of Insiders, at least. And, judging by the picture, approximately twice as tall as Julia. We want to see your travel photos with the Insider, too! Email them to...
Instagram photo of the week – Tue, 28 Jan 2014
Tsk tsk, looks like someone wasn’t doing their homework. Full disclosure: it was us ( ::hangs head in shame:: ). Instagram user @megnutty tagged us in this sweet photo – of Angelina’s Ristorante Italiano – way back in the fall, and we were too asleep at the wheel to spot them. Well, we’ve righted that wrong. Also, we thought we could all use a break from snow photos (please anyone taking a vacation let us stow away in your luggage...
Classic Concord photo – Tue, 28 Jan 2014
Reader Earl Burroughs sent us this photo of the Wonalancet Club’s float from a Concord parade in 1897, although float is probably used liberally here (a sleigh full of that many dudes would obviously sink – duh.) Anyway, we’ve decided that modern parades could benefit from utilizing more items from this photo, most notably different colored horses, those amazing chef-type hats the club members are wearing and the mitten, ball and...
Love your neighbor – Tue, 21 Jan 2014
Here’s some proof that being neighborly isn’t entirely a lost art. These kind residents on Sewalls Falls Road took it upon themselves to warn fellow motorists of potential hazards in the roadway. It was either that or some enterprising squirrels, but that seems somehow less likely. Either way, thanks, kind sirs!
Where the Insider Goes – Tue, 21 Jan 2014
This photo and note came to us from Sylvia Miskoe: “You can’t get there from here, but Sylvia Miskoe and Brenda Sens managed to get to Havana, Cuba, earlier in November. Here we are in front of a 400-year-old wall in the old section of the city.” Don’t worry, wall, you don’t look a day over 385. Also, sweet hats, ladies!
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 21 Jan 2014
This is the serenely-named Asylum Pond on the State Hospital grounds on Pleasant Street, courtesy of reader Earl Burroughs. Based on that kind of creative naming criteria, we can only assume other items featured in this photo include redish shedlike building and super tall skinny smokestacky thing.
Instagram photo of the week – Tue, 21 Jan 2014
This is the steamiest picture in the Insider this week! Featuring, you know, actual steam. It comes to us from Instagram user @photoxbalm and appears to be a cool scene from White Park. But we can’t totally tell.
Throwing falling snow – Mon, 20 Jan 2014
Early Sunday morning (01-19-14) snow is blown off of White Park's pond for ice skating. Photograph courtesy of Larry Levinson.
Getting our rock face on – Tue, 14 Jan 2014
Here are Nicholas and Mary Jane Wallner in front of the Treasury or ‘Al-Khazneh’ in the Petra valley of Jordan. According to Nicholas, Petra is a city carved in the rock face more than 2,000 years ago!
Instagram photo of the week – Tue, 14 Jan 2014
We’re not sure if you’ve noticed, but it snowed out a little bit this winter. Thanks to Instagram user @mcashion, we now have photographic evidence. This photograph has it all, from bookend downtown buildings to artful footsteps through the snow to a rogue snowflake attacking the camera! If you want to see your Instagram photos in the newspaper, just tag us when you post – we’re @concordinsider.
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 14 Jan 2014
Here we have White’s Opera House, which was also the home to the Daily Patriot, according to the sign out front that says, Daily Patriot (we’re nothing if not investigative reporters). It also apparently featured Moving Pictures, which we presume was an advertisement for movies and not a business where people came to your house and shuffled your photos around. Thanks to reader Earl Burroughs for the picture.
Well, well, wellness, what do we have here? – Tue, 14 Jan 2014
Who are these people and why are they smiling? In regards to the latter, it probably has something to do with the tropical scene and donning of short-sleeved shirts. Spoiler alert: this picture wasn’t taken this week! Back in 2011, these 10 folks from Concord traveled to Baltimore to attend an East Coast meeting hosted by the national YMCA, which gives grants to communities serious about weaving together strategies for wellness....
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 07 Jan 2014
Reader Earl Burroughs sent us this photo of the old Norris Bakery, which was replaced by Concord Theater on South Main Street, below Pleasant Street. Looks like Dunkin’ Donuts has nothing on old man Norris, too . . . is that a line of carriages awaiting their morning coffee from the nation’s first bakery drive-thru window?
Bard Owl – Mon, 13 Jan 2014
A neighbor called and said I should come over and bring my camera. This Bard Owl was waiting. He was there for over a half hour per my friend. This is on the Heights.
Instagram photo of the week – Tue, 31 Dec 2013
What with it being the holidays and all, we figured we’d give our faithful readers a week off, so we raided our own stash for this week’s photo of some festive grapey grapes at the Co-op’s Jingle Bell Bash.
Insider goes to Dorado Beach – Wed, 08 Jan 2014
My family and I were lucky enough to spend the week of Christmas in Dorado, Puerto Rico. From left to right: Lev Koltookain, Deb Koltookian, Dot Koltookian, Leah Lundquist, Keith Lundquist and Ella Lundquist. 4 generations of Concordians!
A downtown jewel – Tue, 24 Dec 2013
Kristin Kennedy, a longtime member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, celebrated the opening of her fine jewelry studio and gallery at 30A Warren Street with an open house Dec. 17. And guess what? She totally made all that stuff in the case! There’s plenty more to see there, so stop on by for a visit.
We've come full circle – Tue, 24 Dec 2013
This isn’t just Jodi Roos and friend Ellen Kaplan holding the ‘Insider’ at the Sea of Gallilee in Israel. Well, it is that. But it’s also a trip down ‘Insider’ memory lane. You see, it was Roos’s daughter, Alexa Roos, who was interviewed by the ‘Insider’ while in New Zealand. Roos sent a copy of the paper featuring the interview to Alexa, and she snapped the first ever Where the Insider Goes photo. And, as Roos notes, “the rest, as...
Strength in numbers – Tue, 24 Dec 2013
With Christmas less than a week away and many families looking for that perfect holiday main course, a flock of wild turkeys make their way back to a wooded area off Mountain Road to avoid being seen by any hungry Concordian. Luckily for us, these turkeys are huge fans of the “Insider” and stopped for just enough time for a quick photo shoot.
Instagram photo of the week – Tue, 24 Dec 2013
This week a special treat – a photo and caption from an Instagram user. We decided we simply couldn’t top these words of wisdom from Instagram user @rebeccath1980: “Good grief, Commodore Perkins, put on your hat! (The eagle looks a bit grumpy too).”
Instagram photo of the Week – Tue, 07 Jan 2014
Instagram user @unbelievabilly delivers once again, this time with a fiery morning sky over Concord. If you look closely, you can see the dome peeking out from behind one of those tree branches. And if you look even closer, you can see the Insider staff dropping eggs out of said dome. Tag us in your Instagram photos – we’re @concordinsider.
Classic Concord photo – Tue, 24 Dec 2013
This week’s classic Concord photo comes to us from Jim Boyle and features former Concord mayor Herb Quinn, back when he was future Concord mayor Herb Quinn (confused yet?) That’s Quinn on the left following a St. John’s gridiron battle, flanked by celebrated local coach Tom Hardiman.
A glass case of emotion – Tue, 24 Dec 2013
Thomas Devaney has this case of his artwork on display at NHTI, and is working on a show for St. Paul’s in 2015 featuring 3D video mapping (Turn back to Page 8 for more information on that.) You can find more of his work on Facebook at facebook.com/T.DevaneyFineArt or by visiting tdevaney.com.
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 31 Dec 2013
This photo came to us from reader Earl Burroughs, and features Butters Tavern, a famous hostelry back in the days of stage coaches and river boats, located on South Main Street opposite West Street. Fun fact: It took so long to take a photo back in those days, that couple out front left the house to pose and by the time they turned to head back, the entire structure had been overtaken by leafy greens. So they just stayed out there....
Maiden Voyage – Tue, 31 Dec 2013
Either Alice Tobin and Linda Schmidt of Concord waited a little too long to go apple picking or they’re really early. Or they simply wanted to enjoy the views at the Carter Hill Orchard following their first snowshoeing voyage of the season recently. You decide.
First Shoe of the Season – Fri, 20 Dec 2013
Alice Tobin and Linda Schmidt of Concord enjoy the views at the Carter Hill Orchard.
Czech Mix – Tue, 17 Dec 2013
Our groundbreaking Bearcat coverage has gone international, thanks to Debbie Varnell, seen here with her sisters, Marilyn Soboti and Kathryn Minkler, her father, Jesse Sobotik, and brother, Mark Sobotik, at Pustevny, an alpine resort in the Beskydy Mountains in the Czech Republic.
Classic Concord photo – Tue, 17 Dec 2013
This picture was taken sometime before they paved paradise and put up a parking lot, and sent to us by reader Earl Burroughs. That’s White Memorial Universalist Church, aptly named for its whiteness and universalness, which was replaced by a parking lot on the corner of North State and School Streets. Got a classic Concord photo everyone should see? Shoot it our way at...
Instagram photo of the week – Tue, 17 Dec 2013
This colorful shot of a bench outside of the YMCA came from Instagram user @unbelievabilly. It’s like sitting on a rainbow!
