Worth a second look – Tue, 08 Apr 2014
So we goofed! In last week’s Insider we had this sweet center spread of art from the annual student exhibition at St. Paul’s, including this creative piece by Concord’s own Anne Muller. The only problem is that we spelled Muller’s name wrong. (Insert striking forehead with palm.) So here’s another look at Muller’s piece. And don’t forget to check out the exhibit in the Hargate Gallery through April 19.

Things we learned about 1905 from this photo: Baseball socks were apparently the inspiration for the wicked witch wardrobe in the Wizard of Oz, baseball used to be two words, preppy bros didn’t actually invent the popped collar (these guys did!) and baseball apparently used to be played in triangles. Things we didn’t learn about 1905 from this photo: Whether there was a rival Hexagonal Interscholastic Base Ball League. Thanks to...

Mind-melting fact alert: this photo of avocados was originally posted to Instagram by user @charcole7, prompting us to use it as our Instagram photo of the week, prompting him to Instagram a picture of his own picture in the newspaper, prompting us to now run a picture of his picture of his own picture in the newspaper. You’re move, @charcole7.

Hey, those guys look familiar! As if former Insider editor Ben Conant and current editor Keith Testa didn’t see enough of this picture in print already, it appears this concert poster was suffering from a case of mistaken identity, as suggested by Instagram user @ broussardish, who snapped this photo. Those faces belong to Ben and Keith, but those names most certainly do not. We can only assume they are real people, though (kidding:...
Make yourself at home – Tue, 01 Apr 2014
Potential Craigslist advertisement: “Apartment for rent, partially furnished. Heat, hot water, walls and other structural elements not included. Spacious living room with year-round breezes offers plenty of room to entertain.” We haven’t found that actual listing yet, but we did find this couch just chillin’ on the side of Sewalls Falls Road. It wasn’t clear if some rent-wary tenant was in the process of creating a revolutionary free...

We’re guessing this wasn’t the intended destination of this trolley, a guess we’re basing on angles alone. Seriously, why is everything in this picture bent? Anyway, apparently this is what trolley travel was like in the dark ages before they had things like Google Maps, or maybe just maps. It’s either that or this was a crash cooked up by the original conceiver of Hummer automobiles, who was trying to convince Concord it needed more...
St. Patrick's Day Scholarship Fundraiser – Thu, 27 Mar 2014
As part of the Woman’s Club of Concord’s mission to empower women, we award the Woman’s Club of Concord Annual $1000 Scholarship to high school senior girls who shows promise. We have been doing this since the early 1900's and we would love to reconnect with some if not all our WCC Scholarship Winners.

For years we’ve been advocating for more trains in the Capitol City. But just like everything else we try to get done around here, our voices have gone unheard. Unfortunately, trains are a thing of the past in these parts, that is unless you consider model trains and in that case, we don’t have enough fingers and toes to count that high. This fine set of tracks, circa 1900, eventually became home to the Capitol Shopping Center on...
Don’t worry, we’ll pay you back – Tue, 18 Mar 2014
Intown Concord held its Locally Famous Art Auction as part of its annual meeting Thursday evening, and Rick Broussard went home with Keith’s creation after shelling out what he estimated to be “$1 per brush stroke.” Given that, we can only hope he assumed Keith did the whole thing in one continuous brush stroke. But Rick is willing to let the bidding continue (“no reason to be selfish with my acquisition,” he said), with all proceeds...

We love this photo from Instagram user @ megnutty, but we love her description even better: “Sick of the snow but I’ll take that sunset.” We’ll take it, too. We’ll also take a couple slices of pizza, if you’ve got ‘em.

These homes most likely housed some books, and maybe some people or something, but this spot later became prime real estate for volumes. The houses seen above were located at the corner of Prince and Green Streets until they were removed in the early 1930s to make way for the Concord Public Library. We like to believe the two homes that were relocated belonged to the Dewey and Decimal families, who later saw their children tie the...

You don’t mess with the Duckler – Tue, 11 Mar 2014
There was drama at the coffee pot at Monitor Manor last week. Those seeking a morning java fix were greeted by a message from ‘Monitor’ celeb Ray Duckler, or more accurately, about a dozen photocopied messages. The text? “Rules to live by: you make the coffee, you clean the pot – Duckler.” Sage advice, we say.

Given the snow cover on the ground in this image, you might think we flew into the future and took this shot in late May of this year, but it’s actually from reader Earl Burroughs and shows the business office and Conover House at St. Paul’s School in 1887. Man, the 80s were so cool.

This photo by Instagram user @mcashion is all about perspective and angles, but we failed geometry, so to us it’s all about the No. 11 in a black circle. Wait, circles are in geometry, right? Yessss, take that, math teacher!

Ways to tell downtown Concord has changed in the last 135 years or so? It’s in color now! Also, you no longer find a grocer, a fish market and a meat market within 50 feet of each other as you do here. Nor do you find a horse trough and drinking fountain in the center of Pleasant Street, though since they are reconsidering the Main Street project, it might be something to consider adding. But really, would a more horse-friendly...

It’s difficult to believe anyone could be shoveling into the wee hours of the night given the mild and dry winter we’ve had, especially recently, but this image from Instagram user @charcole7 seems to show someone and his shadow doing just that. As @charcole noted in the Instagram caption, too bad this dude couldn’t help out. Want to see your picture in the newspaper? It’s easy – just tag us when you post. We’re...

Reader Clayton Higgins dropped this gem by the Insider office. That sweet paint job is a reproduction of the cover of a ‘Fire Engineering’ issue from 1967 done by John Forrestal, which Fire Chief Earl Giles received permission to use on a car in the fire prevention unit. Good thing Forrestal hadn’t recreated a ‘Tiger Beat’ cover.

What else is there to do when a foot of new snow falls, besides mutter profanities under your breath? Go sledding! This action was captured over at White Park by reader Larry Levinson. Thanks, Larry!
Where the Insider Goes – Tue, 04 Feb 2014
In memory of their mother, six of eight siblings – including Margaret Dyer, who sent in the photo – and their families spent Thanksgiving where the pilgrims and Native Americans had their first all-inclusive tropical getaway: Cancun, Mexico, According to Dyer, their mother “made it all possible.”
A job well done – Tue, 04 Feb 2014
Here’s a little dose of summer camp to help you get through the winter, readers. Ryan Donnelly of Concord was honored at the end of last year in a special ceremony at Camp Spaulding to commemorate his achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. The community service project Ryan chose took place at Camp Spaulding, where he saw a need for a recycling system and set out to make it happen. After planning and creating a miniature scale version to...

Given the recent turn of events with the Complete Streets project, we figured what better time to highlight our downtown in nostalgic sepia tones. In other news, the snowfall depicted above would have gridlocked Atlanta for at least two days. Thanks to Instagram user @scandinavianbrother for the shot.

That dude who is just straight chillin’ is William J. Campbell, who settled in Concord with his bride, Edythe Devereaux Campbell, in the early 1900s. Thanks to his grandson, Richard Campbell Jr., for sending us this photo and some knowledge: This horse and cart could be spotted throughout the streets of Concord as William “peddled baked goods” to the citizens of Concord in the 1920s. Which begs the question – how did this stop being...
