Reader Earl Burroughs sent us this classic Concord photo of the original Odd Fellows Home on Pleasant Street. Forget about those boring old robins – it’s the traditional first goose of spring! Reader David Berliner sent us this pic of a goose that just moved in to town. He said the waterfowl was “honking like crazy” for a couple days until, lo and behold, his mate showed up! She was probably just putting on her beakstick.

As it turns out, this picture was taken at St. Basilica Square in Vatican City. Good thing they are safely back home, because we have a feeling that area is about to get a lot busier!

On Oct. 13, 1899, Spanish-American War hero Admiral George Dewey’s train made a brief stop in Concord, where it was saluted with 17 railroad torpedoes (small explosives used as a warning for oncoming trains) as it approached and departed the station. Pretty cool stuff!

A couple weeks back, we ran a classic Concord photo of downtown’s Masonic Block all gussied up for a parade. Reader DJ Annicchiarico of United Shoe Repair (housed in the self-same Masonic Block) hooked us up with this picture of the block after it was ravaged by a fire in 1962. The building was subsequently torn down and replaced with the buildings you see today. Thanks for the photo, DJ!
