Poem: Winter’s eve

Daylight fades to darkness, another winter eve does call, the warmth of the fire beckons me, as the snow continues to fall. There is peace within my heart, when winter casts another stone, for I embrace this solitude, this cold winter eve alone. Perhaps it is the bittersweet thoughts, of winters past where my thoughts do roam, as a child in the early years, with many friends and family home. In this vast world we live, this winter...

Poem: Memorial Day

There are times that we gather, moments when silence is our only friend,   we contemplate what once was, until those days did end.   We place a small flag on a grave, on a sunny day feeling quite alone,   this person that served, their heroism not known.   There are times we hold sacred, we do something just because,   we plant flowers and pray, for those thoughts once was.   People make their pilgrimage,...

Sometimes when it’s really hot, you just gotta take your horse into the Merrimack River for a quick dip. That’s what they say, right? At least that’s the scene Instagram user @tkc2000 presented recently. Makes sense, though – a kiddie pool in the backyard wouldn’t exactly cut it for this guy. Photo credit goes to Instagram user @kylephaneufmusic.

It looks to us as if Instagram user @starryeyedandrestless has captured the first ever cloud ultrasound. Hope that mama cloud is ready to be sleep deprived for the next 18 years or so! It might be time for a second job, too – cloud college ain’t cheap (or even a thing that exists!).

Eagle-eyed Instagram user @hayleymcintire spotted this all-American housing arrangement and snapped a picture just before July 4, noting that “there’s nothing more American than the view these patriotic New England homes have of the field.” Couldn’t agree more, @hayleymcintire. Well, unless there was apple pie. There should always be apple pie.

According to Instagram user @boudreaujr, “Mrs. Cardinal was not too happy about sharing the feeder with a Rose Breasted Grosbeak,” which is really just an excuse for us to get the phrase “rose breasted grosbreak” in the newspaper (outside of Missed Connections, we mean). Mission accomplished!

Here we have Elm House, presumably named after Reinhorn Elm (note: not a real guy), which once stood at the corner of North Main and Pleasant Street extension and also stood next to a store that sold flour, corn, meal, feed and oats – it must have been a “food items with absolutely no flavor” store. We know those were big back in the day. Thanks to reader Earl Burroughs for the photo.

Dinner is served, and apparently it’s ‘Monitor’ maintenance wizard Earl Smith and his daughter, Taylor, who stopped off with the Insider in Jamaica this spring. Should we tell them there’s a rather hungry looking creature with cutlery behind them? Nah, we don’t want to interrupt vacation.

It’s just like the old saying goes, you can’t see the park through this forest. That’s mostly because this image of Rollins Park features dozens of what reader Earl Burroughs – who sent us the picture – calls “magnificent pine trees,” many of which were ultimately lost in the hurricane of 1938. It made the park much more parky and way less foresty (apologies for boring you with scientific terminology).

Look at good ol’ Danny Webster, still getting the ladies excited at the ripe old age of 235. We guess that’s what happens when you’re tall, dark and literally sculpted. Word has it he’s also a tremendous listener and he never talks back. This photo is from Instagram user @cherryblueskies89 and was snapped during her second day in New Hampshire – we can only assume she was hangin’ with Franky Pierce the first day. Keep ‘em coming,...

We thought this might have been a prototype for the original game of Clue (“Rev. J.E. Barry did it, in the gymnasium, with the Samurai sword. That was a Clue weapon, right?) But it turns out it’s something even weirder than that, a postcard of St. Paul’s School buildings! That way you could send your classmate in the lower school a special note from the upper school so you wouldn’t have to miss each other between breakfast and dinner....

Um, construction guys, we hate to break it to you, but it looks like when you were putting in the gymnastics rings for when Concord hosts the 20-whatever summer Olympics thanks to its revitalized downtown, you put them in upside down. Also, nobody has three arms. Signed, management. That’s a joke, of course (complete list of things that would be worse than having the Olympics in Concord: full-body poison ivy).
