When you’ve been married for 60 years, sometimes you forget things – even something as big as your anniversary. When one member of the union lets the important day slip his or her mind, it can turn into a real bad situation, but it’s not such a big deal when both parties are guilty of missing the joyous occasion. Welcome to the world of Tom and Elli Graham. Despite the big milestone of 60 years of wedlock and a gathering planned for...
These students in the 21C program have the world in their hands
s part of the Lights On Afterschool nationwide event, students in the 21C after school program at Rundlett Middle School built a Rube Goldberg Machine on Thursday afternoon. What’s that? According to rubegoldberg.com, it’s “an overly complex contraption, designed with humor and a narrative, to accomplish a simple task.” Students ran a ball down a ramp, through a stack of yogurt cups and into science books stacked like dominos, which...

The Capital Area Wellness Coalition has some healthy tips for families
Statistics show childhood obesity at an all-time high. This increase in obesity has resulted in a higher prevalence of “adult” diseases in children: Type 2 diabetes, heart conditions, high blood pressure, stroke, and depression. There are many theories assigned to this epidemic – the amount of processed foods consumed, lack of exercise, increased use of screen time, or likely, a combination of all. The good news is this trend is...
When's cake? – Tue, 21 Oct 2014
The Insider received its first ever wedding invitation when Ashley and Jonas Bendiks got hitched this May, and of course we happily accepted. We then proceeded to hit the open bar pretty hard, use our finger to steal some of the frosting off the cake and nap in the coat closet until morning. So we may not remember it, but this picture proves we were there! And is that our good buddy Luke Bonner, recently wed himself, in the back row?...
This week in vending machine atrocities, starring a ‘patty sandwich’
We’ve always shared our favorite vending machine discoveries from here at Monitor headquarters, and this may be the best one yet – it’s a sandwich very much in the shape of the fabled McDonald’s McRib, which has developed something of a cult following among food bloggers (and probably emergency room attendants). But whereas McDonald’s leaves more to the imagination, this thing subscribes fully to the “truth in advertising” maxim –...
Tim gets some reps in with Tot Spot toddlers as he envisions his future
As some of you may know, my wife and I recently welcomed a beautiful and happy baby girl named Sophie into our lives. She sure is a bundle of joy, and she’s growing up so fast. It feels like yesterday we were bringing her home from the hospital, but in fact she turned six weeks on Monday. Where does the time go? Before we know it, she’s going to be running around, getting into all kinds of mischief and likely making life a little more...

We made our annual trek to Spirit Halloween in the Steeplegate Mall to find the coolest costumes and decorations
Was there ever any doubt who’d win the library card challenge?
It’s official people – the Concord Public Library is better than its Hooksett counterpart. Well, at least when it comes to getting people to sign up for new library cards – and probably just about everything else. If you didn’t know, September was National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and what better way to make things interesting then with a little challenge? So Joann Salemy, administrative specialist at the Concord Public Library,...
Instagram photo of the Week – Tue, 21 Oct 2014
This photo from the land of a million pointy green things comes to us from Instagram user @charcole7 and is actually some sort of plant life, we presume. Either way, it’s funky. We want to see your super cool Instagram photos, too – tag us when you post with #concordinsider and we will find them.
Halloween Howl is back and you know what that means – free candy
The calendar may say that Halloween is next Friday, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait to go trick-or-treating. At least not in downtown Concord. That’s because Intown Concord’s annual Halloween Howl festivities are taking place this Friday, a week before the big day. So you know what that means – more candy for everyone.“We figured why not double the candy and double the fun,” said Intown Concord’s operations manager Liza...

Sign up for a stroll through the Audubon’s Enchanted Forest
Back by popular demand – and for one night only – the Enchanted Forest returns to entertain nature enthusiasts of all ages. That’s right, this Saturday night, the woods outside the McLane Audubon Center will magically be transformed into family friendly Halloween fun central. Just picture this: You meet your leader and co-leader outside the Audubon Center. They lead you (of course) to a trail at the edge of the woods. There’s a rope,...
There’s still time to send us your spooky decoration photos
We put out a call for pictures of your favorite Halloween decorations in Concord last week, and guess what –we’re doing it again. Why? Because we want to gather as many as we can to put in next week’s paper. And because we’re just relentless like that. Thanks to Abby Tomich for the photo to the left of her porch decorated with purple skeletons and what we presume is a fake spider (either that or there was a real one on the camera...
Classic Concord Photo – Tue, 21 Oct 2014
This is a photo of a postcard of City Hall, sent to us by reader Earl Burroughs. It does beg the question of why anyone would want a postcard of city hall, but perhaps all the wastewater treatment plant postcards were sold out. Either way, it’s super authentic because of the wavy postage stamp still visible in ghost form in the background.
City Briefly
Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell injects human growth hormone into a pumpkin in his yard in hopes it will grow large enough to carve the city memo into. Instead it just turns into Alex Rodriguez, so Aspell invites him in to watch the World Series and they write the city memo together.Dig thisParking, interrupted This week, work crews will begin pavement cutting and digging in the center of North Main Street, from School Street to...
