With Memorial Day less than a week away, it’s time to start thinking about those gardens.
On the previous page, we gave you a quick rundown of what you can find at a few local garden centers and nurseries.
What we also found through our impeccable sleuthing skills is a couple of plant sales going on this week/weekend that will be beneficial if you’re trying to get your garden planted during what we’ve been told is the perfect weekend for it. So think long and hard about what you want to grow this year and then head down to one or all of these sales (and even throw in a garden center or nursery if so inclined) to make this your best one yet.
Department of Corrections Store
As you’re probably aware of, the N.H. Department of Corrections has a retail store just down the road from the state prison filled with things like furniture, finely crafted wood creations and artwork.
But they also have a large greenhouse out back that is currently filled to the brim with vegetables starters, herbs and flowers for their annual plant sale.
The sale actually started on Monday, but don’t worry because its going all week and there’s plenty to choose from.
On the vegetable side of things, there will be all kinds of varieties of peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, lettuce and cauliflower. They also have brussels sprouts starters.
For herbs, there will be oregano, basil, rosemary, thyme, chives and lavender.
Add in marigolds, geraniums, petunias and many other flowers, and this has all the makings of a serious get for your garden.
The store, located at 312 N. State St., is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There will be single pots ($2.50), six packs ($3) and hanging baskets available.
Bow Garden Club
This Saturday, the club’s annual spring plant sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the Bow Community Center, 3 Bow Center Road.
At the sale, you will find annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetable starters, hanging plants and hardy plants taken straight from members’ gardens all available for purchase. Proceeds will benefit the Bow High School Scholarship Program and the club’s ongoing civic beautification efforts around Bow.
Garden club members will be available for assistance and to advise sale patrons by providing instruction on planting their purchases.
Since the sale usually goes pretty quickly, club fundraising chairwoman Joyce Kimball encourages you to get there early.
A larger quantity and diversity of plants have been ordered this year to make sure there’s enough for everyone – at least hopefully.
The members table will feature hardy perennials that club members consider “tried and true” plants for low prices.
There will be a free potting table for the kids where they can learn how to plant seeds and take them home in a pot.
