Book of the Week: ‘Comfort Food Diaries’

The Comfort Food Diaries: My Quest for the Perfect Dish to Mend a Broken Heart

Emily Nunn

2017, 310 pages

Nonfiction

What better time to talk about comfort food than the dead of winter? Emily Nunn tells the story of how a cold, dark time in her life brought her on a journey to explore comfort food and much more. After losing her job to the recession and her brother to suicide, Nunn falls back into alcohol addiction and her personal life falls apart when her relationship ends with her longtime boyfriend. She spirals out of control and desperately needs comfort and time to heal, not to mention a place to live. A culinary writer by trade, Nunn reaches out to friends, family and colleagues and starts out on a pilgrimage to taste everyone’s comfort food.

This book touches on the serious topics of addiction and family dysfunction but is balanced by Nunn’s vivid descriptions of food and the delicious recipes that are peppered throughout the book. It is a very moving story that will also inspire you to whip up something in your own kitchen.
