Andy Weir doesn’t disappoint with his follow up to the best-selling novel (and block buster movie) The Martian. While this book isn’t a sequel to The Martian, it does feature many of the same elements that made his debut such a success: likable characters, lots of humor, fascinating science and a thrilling conclusion (this time on the moon).
Jasmine “Jazz” Bashara is Weir’s cunning and smart mouthed heroine for this novel. She lives in Artemis, the only city on the moon, which makes for an intriguing setting for the story. Jazz is a porter and smuggler of goods from Earth, who is always on the lookout for money-making opportunities that will improve her paltry living conditions in the city. When one of her best customers offers her a “get rich quick” job, it is too much for her to resist. This is when the space adventure kicks into high gear and the pages really start to turn. Jazz needs all her smarts and a few good friends to survive and save the city from her misadventure.
Artemis is recommended for readers who enjoy adventure and crime novels peppered with plenty of humor and space science.
