The Olympics are always a blast. Whether it’s for the Winter Games or the summer version, when the international athletic competition takes over the world, we don’t want to miss a moment of the action.
With the games set to take over PyeongChang, South Korea, for two-plus weeks beginning on Friday, like some of you, we can barely contain our excitement. We can’t wait for intense matches of curling, endless kilometers of cross-country skiing and death defying runs down the luge.
But before the actual sporting competitions begin, there’s a bit of a tradition to take care of: The Opening Ceremonies.
It’s when the Olympic torch is lit thanks to the flame from Rio (and its remarkable ability to stay roaring for almost two years). Athletes from each country march in together. There’s a lot of hoopla and pomp and circumstance, and most likely some fireworks. It’s usually quite a sight to see.
With the 14-hour time change (we’re behind), the opening ceremonies are slated to begin live around these parts at 6 a.m. If you’re not an early riser, that’s okay, because Red River Theatres has a better idea. Wake up at a more reasonable time and head down to the theater for an 8:30 a.m. delayed broadcast of the ceremonies.
“It will be fun to see it on the big screen,” said Red River Events and Marketing manager Katie Mosher.
Thanks to a partnership between Red River and the World Affairs Council, you can catch the ceremonies like never before (unless you have access to a movie screen), for free, and with light refreshments. You don’t need to stay for the whole thing if you just want to see the torch lighting or the U.S./any individual country make the ceremonial walk into the games.
