There’s nothing quite like wandering around a farmers market and finding all kinds of great stuff to put in your belly.
It’s actually one of the things we look forward to the most when spring arrives – because it means the warm weather is finally here to stay.
And soon, fans of the Penacook Farmers Market will be able to find all kinds of locally grown foods when the market opens for the year on Monday. The Penacook market has a much shorter season than the one you’ll find in downtown Concord on Saturdays, but that doesn’t mean there’s not a great selection of items to purchase.
Beyond the traditional fruits and veggies that you associate with a farmers market, you’ll find other tasty things like honey, maple syrup, meats, bread, cupcakes and pies. There are also candles and soaps, both soy- and lime-based.
“Like my grandmother used to make,” said market manager Rick Jaques.
But before you start making your way to the market’s location for the last seven years, the Rolfe House on Penacook Street, you might want to keep reading. That’s because this year, the market will be in a brand new spot at 95-97 Village St., next to the Woodlawn Cemetery and basically across the street from Merrimack Valley High School.
“We liked it down there, everyone liked it down there, but there’s not a lot of traffic,” Jaques said.
Now with it being on a main drag, and a bus stops on both sides of the street, something tells us there will be plenty of passer-bys that stop in.
“It’s where the community center is going to build its new building,” Jaques said. “So there’s a lot more space.”
And while most of us probably think of farmers markets as a weekend thing, Mondays make the most sense for the Penacook version.
“It’s easier for us to get farmers and vendors because there’s no other ones on Monday,” Jaques said.
The market will be open each Monday (except July 3) through Aug. 28, from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Also each week, there will be live entertainment, although the schedule is still being worked out.
