Now that spring is officially here, it’s time for another season of Granite State Roller Derby.

With every trace of ice removed from Everett Arena, those circle-skating ladies can finally take to the track – and try to knock each other down in the process.

And since the roller derby season is just getting going, there’s a lot of stuff that the organization is doing to get you excited about it.

If you’re a woman and enjoy skating, then you might want to consider attending an open house on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Everett Arena.

If you want to learn more about what it is like to be a part of the roller derby community, here’s your chance.

You can meet some of the skaters, see what a practice is like and learn how to get involved – even if you don’t know how to skate.

“Just come and meet us and get to know what we’re all about,” said Karen “Taz” Forest, GSRD president.

Then on Saturday, the real action begins. The Granite State All-Stars will kick off their season with a home bout against what will be a formidable opponent.

To start their fifth season, New Hampshire’s top-ranked team will take on the Grand Central Terminators from New York City.

“This particular team is one of the best teams in the world, but we’re playing the equivalent of their C team,” Forest said. “It will be a valuable experience for us in our training.”

The matchup begins at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30. Tickets are $9 in advance (plus a service fee) or $12 at the door. Children 10 and under are free.

“We try to keep it family friendly,” Forest said.

And for those ladies out there who enjoy skating and have thought about joining a roller derby team, there will be a home team tryout session on April 26 from 8 to 10 p.m. at Everett Arena.

There is just one home team this year, the Legislashers, and if you can pass the minimum skills requirement, you make the team.

The team plays six bouts this season.
