We really can’t think of anything more cozy-sounding than being in a room full of quilts.
Don’t you just love weekend afternoons, curled up on the couch with a blanket that’s been hand sewn with care?
They’re also just so nice to look at. That’s why we wanted to share that the Capital Quilters Guild is hosting its biannual quilt show, “Joy to Spring,” this weekend at NHTI.
While you can’t take a nap with any of the quilts on display – or actually even touch them – you can enjoy the fine craftsmanship and learn all about how you can start quilting, or even join the guild.
“We like to promote the art of quilting,” said Guild President Evelyn Johnson. “We’ve got quite a few new members to sign up and join us (at past shows).”
It will cost you $8 to get in, but that will allow you to stroll around the Goldie Crocker Wellness Center and scope out the 130 quilts made by guild members.
And more than half will be taking part in the first-ever judging component of the every other year show.
“When you have a quilt judge, it’s not so much about the ribbon, but the critique of the professional judge. It’s about learning more,” Johnson said. “I want to know how the judge critiques my quilt, and what I can do better.”
In addition to all the displays by the guild, there will be vendors selling fabric and sewing machines, and other quilting stuff.
The guild will have its own booth so you can learn about all of their community projects, like the Christmas stocking project, placemats for Meals on Wheels, pillow cases for Concord Hospital and community quilts.
Quilts of Valor, a nonprofit organization, will have some of their red, white and blue quilts on display that are made to give to veterans. There will also be sewing machines set up with real live quilters creating one right before your very eyes. Members of the guild made 12-inch blocks that will be donated to help create more blankets.
“It’s a very worthy cause,” Johnson said.
The show will run on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Like we said, it will cost you an Abraham Lincoln and three George Washingtons to get in each day, but then you can come and go as you please. The power of the stamped hand.
Raffle tickets will be sold to purchase the amazing quilt pictured above. You can buy one for $1 or six for $5. There will also be a separate raffle for a new sewing machine and basket, proceeds of which will go to Wounded Warriors.
