Grant writing workshop Friday

Educators interested in applying for N.H. State Council on the Arts’ arts education grants are invited to attend a grant writing workshop at the Plymouth State University Graduate Center in Concord on Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Two specific grant programs will be the focus of the workshop: Artist Residencies in Schools grants, which fund artist residencies that bring juried teaching artists into classrooms and public schools to support creative learning and skills development in the arts; and Youth Arts Projects for Creative Youth Development grants, which fund high-quality arts and cultural programs that encourage creativity, develop new arts skills and foster success for young people beyond the normal school day. Each has an April deadline to apply for programs taking place during the 2017-18 academic year.

At the workshop, NHSCA staff will present an overview of the State Arts Council’s programs and the latest information on grants, including changes to the State Arts Council’s grant guidelines. Roles of partners, thematic curriculum connections, working with and supporting academic disciplines, choice of artists, writing goals and outcomes, evaluation for improvement and planning residency schedules will also be addressed.

Both new and former NHSCA grant applicants are invited to participate. There is no cost to attend the workshop, but space is limited and registration is required.

Schools sought for sustainability

Is your school looking for a nationally-recognized program which offers real-world opportunities to achieve measurable sustainability results and improve student learning? Eco-Schools USA in New Hampshire is a free program serving public, charter and private schools and provides a roadmap to sustainability through resources, guidance and recognition. Students engage in active citizenship, build critical thinking abilities and strengthen their skills in math and science and acquire a sound environmental ethic. At the same time, schools conserve resources and reduce water, resulting in financial savings.

New Hampshire Audubon, as the state affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation, is managing the Eco-Schools USA program across the state and is looking to support additional schools as they embrace sustainability programming. Action Grant funds are now available to registered Eco-Schools. These grants are designed to assist a school implement the Eco-Schools program.

For more information and a grant application, visit nhaudubon.org/learn/ eco-schools-usa or contact Kelly Dwyer, Eco-Schools USA NH Coordinator, at kdwyer@nhaudubon.org.

FIT seeks VISTA work applications

Families in Transition seeks applications from nonprofits and government agencies throughout New Hampshire that are interested in hosting a professional AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) work at their agency for a small stipend during the July 2017- July 2018 program year.

VISTA “host sites” benefit from a VISTA volunteer by receiving the support of a full-time staff member without the high cost of salary and benefits.

AmeriCorps VISTA, a program managed by the Corporation for National & Community Service, comprises a nationwide network of volunteers who commit to serve full-time for at least one year at nonprofits, and faith-based or government agencies.

The Families in Transition VISTA Program partners with organizations, called “host sites,” such as the Arts in Reach, New Hampshire Department of Education, United Way of Greater Nashua and others across New Hampshire, to place VISTAs in the following service areas: education, veterans’ services, economic opportunity, health, and disaster relief and prevention.

Qualifying host sites must fulfill a number of program requirements, including submitting an application to the Families in Transition VISTA Program by 5 p.m. on March 17. Interested agencies are strongly encouraged to attend a VISTA Host Site Information Session at 161 S. Beech St., Manchester on Feb. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m., to learn more about the Families in Transition VISTA Program. RSVP by calling 641-9441 ext. 357 or emailing fitvista@fitnh.org on or before Feb. 17.

Prospective VISTA host sites may also apply online using the application through fitnh.org/hire-a-vista. To learn more about the AmeriCorps VISTA program, interested agencies can also visit americorps.gov/VISTA.

For more information about the program or FIT, visit fitnh.org or call 641-9441.

Learn how to research family

Family history is one of the most valuable pursuits you can participate in – learning about who you are, where you come from, and “meeting” the thousands of people who came before you, can be a rewarding and even life-changing experience. But how do you get started?

There are plenty of websites, libraries and printed sources out there, but access to all that information can leave a beginner feeling overwhelmed. In the Starting Your Family Genealogy workshop, New England Historic Genealogical Society Director of Research Services Lindsay Fulton will help participants navigate the first steps in tracing their family history and teach basic strategies for researching. Even if you’ve already been doing research for a few years, you’re sure to learn a new tip or two!

The workshop will be held Feb. 25 at the N.H. Historical Society at 1 p.m.

Space is limited, and registration is required. The cost for this workshop is $35 for historical society or the New England Historic Genealogical Society members and $50 for nonmembers.
