As Valentine’s Day approaches, celebrate songs of love – and love of song – at February’s Bach’s Lunch programs at the Concord Community Music School.
On Thursday, Mark Shilansky, assistant professor at Berklee College of Music, will give a lecture titled “When the Singer Meets the Song: Vocal Interpretation.”
In his lecture, Shilansky will ask: Where does the song end and the singer begin? Often, a song is transformed through its performance by jazz and popular music vocalists, and even by the life circumstances of these artists, accruing meaning that its composer may not have intended. Audience members will explore this process, listening to various versions of the songs like “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen, and “The Ballad of the Sad Young Men,” by Fran Landesmann and Tommy Wolf.
On Feb. 9, faculty members Peggo Horstmann Hodes and Kent Allyn return for their annual and well-loved Valentine’s-themed Bach’s Lunch. This year’s concert will feature love songs that take audience members to the moon and back, with selections like “Blue Moon,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” and “Dancin’ in the Moonlight.” From corny to romantic, the duo’s songs will include favorite movie songs, jazz ballads and Van Morrison.
Bach’s Lunch programs are free and open to the public, and held from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. on the first and second Thursdays of each month.
