Although many people – especially around these parts – consider Super Bowl Sunday to be greater than Christmas, New Year’s and their birthday combined, we understand (but only vaguely) that not everybody is a football fan.
For those people, it’s just another Sunday, killing time before getting back to the grind. Since we like to look out for everybody, we came up with a list – a short one, albeit – of things you can do Sunday instead of watching “the big game,” as it is so often and so cheesily called.
Movies
One of the great pastimes that requires little effort or interaction is going to the movies. Concord happens to have two theaters – Red River Theatres and Regal – and they’ll both be open during the Super Bowl. You may want to check out Jackie at Red River – that is, if you liked Tim’s review on page 5. Regal has a larger selection of movies, but they’re different from the ones at Red River, so there are plenty of options. Go to redrivertheatres.org or regmovies.com for full listings.
Bowling
Bowling is another classic activity that, much like the Insider, never seems to go out of style.
At Boutwell’s Bowling Center, you can live it up like the old days with some good old-fashioned New England candlepin bowling – the small ball and skinny pin kind. While you’re at it, you can play some old-school arcade games or some air hockey, if you prefer.
The alley is open until 9 p.m. on Sundays, so show up early to get in a few strings.
Quiet dinner
If you’re looking to go out to eat but don’t want to get caught up in some loud and rambunctious Super Bowl party, consider stopping by Hermanos Cocina Mexicana, home of zero televisions.
At Hermanos, it’s all about the dining experience – no gimmicks, no nonsense. Although there is usually free, live jazz music playing just about every night, there may not be an act during Super Bowl Sunday – call Hermanos at 224-5669 as Sunday approaches to find out if anybody will be playing. If not, it’ll be a relaxing night for you and your sweetheart.
Mall
Just like in high school, when all else fails, go to the mall. Whether you’re in the market for some new shoes, a calendar or nothing at all, the Steeplegate Mall is at the very least a clean, dry, relatively quiet place to walk around and get some exercise. You may even bump into a fellow non-sports fan while you’re there and forge a lifelong friendship. The possibilities are endless.
