This year’s festival is about more than just movies – it’s a celebration of all things indie. And anyone who’s anyone knows you can’t have an indie fest without indie music.
That’s why Rob Azevedo will be hosting a special Granite State of Mind at NEC Concord on Wednesday night.
This show, which offers audience members the chance to ask questions of local musicians during their sets, will feature at least four performers instead of the traditional one. And instead of playing their own, original tunes, they’ll play what they love about music in movies.
“Don ‘The Don’ Bartenstein will be there singing ‘Makes No Difference’ from the movie The Last Waltz,” Azevedo said. “In my mind’s eye, I can hear Don singing that one. And Kenny Weiland, another great guitar player and singer, is going to tackle ‘Summertime’ by Porgy and Bess and the Oz classic, ‘If I Only Had A Brain.’ Mack The Knife is on his list as well. That’s a nice set. We have Mary Fagan returning from Nashville to sing a Neil Young song, ‘Don’t Let It Bring You Down’ from American Beauty and the well-respected Hank Osborne will do ‘Jersey Girl’ from Jersey Girl.”
Whew. What a lineup.
All of the performers, Azevedo said, are from either the Lakes Region or right here in Concord.
“We don’t discriminate, though – send us artists from the coast or one of the great voices from up Interstate 89 and we would welcome them with open arms.”
This event promises to be a fun, light-hearted affair that lovers of all music and movies should appreciate. It’s not often that you get to see a musical performance featuring all your favorite movie soundtrack hits.
“We forget sometimes how vital music is within the whole experience of seeing a movie,” Azevedo said. “Yes, what takes place on screen is everything, but the soundtrack, the strings or cellos or trumpet or some haunting violins are what we take home with us.”
