We all know you can walk around in a costume and ask for candy. But can you run a 5K in said costume?
Because Families in Transition is hosting its fifth annual Wicked FIT Run on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Rollins Park.
And the point is to have lots of people run a few miles dressed as just about anything. Although just remember, this is a family-friendly event.
The annual run gives people the opportunity to support FIT, a Concord-, Manchester- and Dover-based homeless services provider, in their efforts of providing a home and hope to homeless families and individuals.
This year’s goal is to have 1,000 runners/walkers in hopes that they, along with sponsorships, will raise $51,500 to help “chase away homelessness.” This dollar amount will enable Families in Transition to provide 34 families housing and services for one month. Any individual or team that raises over $500 will be titled a “Wicked FIT Superhero” and given a specially designed shirt.
“In 2015, we received almost 5,000 requests for housing and were able to provide housing and social services to over 600 people, half of whom were children,” said Maureen Beauregard, president and founder of Families in Transition. “The need is real. Our Wicked FIT Run is a fun way to get the community involved with helping to find a solution to homelessness in our community.”
People are encouraged to create teams and dress in costume. Prizes will be awarded in several costume categories, as well as race finish times.
The cost to register, if done before noon on Wednesday, is $25 for adults over age 20, $15 for individuals aged 11-19, and free for kids under 10. To register, visit fitnh.org/wickedfitrun. All pre-registered runners and walkers are invited to attend a free pasta dinner courtesy of the Concord Food Co-op the night before the race. Same day registrations for the race will be permitted, but will cost an additional $5 per person.
There will also be a kids fun course that will feature obstacles, team mascots and prizes. Children 8 years old and under are invited to participate in this free course, which begins at 9 a.m.
