Red carpet gala at Discovery Center
Join the Junior Service League of Concord for its Red Carpet Gala on Saturday, from 7 to 11 p.m., at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center.
The 2016 gala beneficiary, Hope on Haven Hill (hopeonhavenhill.org) is a residential substance use recovery home for pregnant women and their babies up to one year postpartum.
Tickets are $85 and include dinner, dancing, a live auction and raffle. Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m.

Ham and bean supper at church
Join us for a classic New England ham and bean supper at East Congregational Church, 51 Mountain Road, on Saturday, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
The menu includes two kinds of made from scratch beans, baked ham, homemade brown bread and rolls, coleslaw, assorted casseroles and a scrumptious dessert buffet.
Costs for adults is $8, children 6 to 12 are $5, and ages 5 and under free. Takeout is available, and the church is handicap accessible. Tickets will be sold for an handcrafted twin size quilt raffle which will be drawn at the Holiday Fair on Nov. 5.

Yogurt Poets at Gibson’s Bookstore
The Poetry Society of New Hampshire will meet at Gibson’s Bookstore on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
This month’s featured poets are the Yogurt Poets Polyphony: 10 members of Concord’s premier poetry group, including Hope Jordan, Kay Morgan, Gail DiMaggio, Nancy Stewart, Anny Jones, Sara Willingham, Mary French, Mary Jo Alibrio, David Coursin and Grace Mattern.
All are welcome, newcomers are encouraged. An open mic follows the featured readers. The Poetry Society meets the third Wednesday of most every month.

Movie screening at NHTI on Friday
On Friday at 7 p.m. in Sweeney Auditorium, NHTI invites the public to a special presentation of the provocative film, This Changes Everything. Shot over four years in nine countries on five continents, this film was inspired by Naomi Klein’s international best-seller of the same name. Klein believes that confronting climate change is the best chance we may ever get to transform the world’s failed economic system into something radically better. The film tells the stories of seven communities on the front lines of the climate crisis.
After the film there will be a discussion led by Dave Oakes, co-founder and President of the Center for Ecological Living and Learning.

St. Paul’s Church to host harvest fair
A harvest fair is being held at St. Paul’s Church, 21 Centre St., on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There will be silent auctions offering a cord of wood seasoned and delivered, seamless gutters, designer china, hand knit blanket, and more. Specialty items include jewelry, holiday items, new gifts, candy, homemade baked goods, books, handcrafted goods, and more.
Coffee will be available from 9 to 11 a.m., with lunch to follow from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds benefit the many ministries of St. Paul’s.

Chelsey Philpot returns to Gibson’s Bookstore on Saturday at 2 p.m. with her second YA novel, Be Good Be Real Be Crazy! Three teenagers. One road trip. Countless detours.
Philpot will also present a workshop for aspiring writers on writing and inspiration, From Inspiration to Story to Page, that will cover the science and craft behind inspiration and how to transform snippets of ideas and random thoughts into characters and plot.

Learn about birds of prey at Gibson’s
On Thursday at 7 p.m., join Gibson’s Bookstore as Nancy Cowan visits to present Peregrine Spring: A Master Falconer’s Extraordinary Life with Birds of Prey, her bestselling memoir of her 30 years living intimately with raptors.
Cowan shares her experiences running a world-famous falconry school, and the lessons she’s learned from her birds.

Walker Lecture series Wednesday
The Walker Lecture series continues on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. with “Natural Wonders of the Northeast Coast” with John Holod of RV Travelogue.

Piccola Opera Idol Saturday at Audi
Over 50 emerging opera singers, from all over the United States, are coming to New Hampshire to participate in the Third Annual Piccola Opera Idol Competition. This competition offers young opera performers the opportunity to participate in an opera competition with cash prizes and performance opportunities.
The final round of the competition is Saturday at 7:30 pm at the Concord City Auditorium. The live competition will offer over $5,000 in cash prizes and
contracts to the winners of the competition.
