The Heights Community Old Home Day is slated for Saturday at Keach Park, and there’s going to be lots of fun for the whole family.
The fourth annual festivities kick off at noon and go all the way to 6 p.m.
“Last year wasn’t as good as we wanted and that was because of the weather,” said organizer Donna Robie. “So we just hope it’s sunny this year.”
Throughout the afternoon, there will be musical performances, contests, games and food – lots of food.
The musical acts begin right away with the duo of Andy & Keith taking the stage from noon to 1 p.m., followed by Will Hatch, a one-man band, from 3 to 4 p.m.
“He plays four or five different instruments,” Robie said.
The Back-2-Back Band closes out the day, playing from 4 to 6 p.m.
There will be a best dessert contest at 1 p.m. and if there’s any left over after the judging, people can do a little taste testing. The presentation of the Heights Cane will be at 1:15.
Starting at 1:30 p.m., the Miss Heights contest will be the main stage attraction where contestants are judged on a turn of the century fashion show, along with questions from the panel of judges.
Crowns will be awarded to first place winners for the Heights Princess (ages 2 -6), Miss Junior Heights (7-11), and Miss Heights (12-16) and small gift bags will be given out to all contestants. This is the first year of the Heights Princess so the winner will be kind of a big deal.
Activities include kick ball, face painting, sack races and frisbee, and youngins can create their own superhero capes and take part in the Burglars Island obstacle race.
This year, the history of the Heights, originally called the “Dark Plain” or “Burglar’s Island” will be celebrated with a 30 foot photo montage that will eventually hang in Arnie’s Place.
“There’s going to be a lot of little tidbits about the Heights,” Robie said. “There’s a lot of history that people forget about.”
And like we said lots of yummy food, like barbecue, fried dough, popcorn, hot dogs, ice cream and candy apples.
This event is free and open to anyone who would like to enjoy a good summer day filled with music, games and food.
“Everything is free unless they want to eat something special,” Robie said.
