Before construction began on the Sewalls Falls Bridge, I could get to Beaver Meadow Golf Course in just a couple of minutes.
Surprisingly though, all of my trips had been golf related – which means I had never eaten at the 19th Hole at Beaver Meadow.
But that all changed after a little lunch time relaxation last week. It was the perfect day to enjoy a sandwich on the patio, watching the golfers putt and tee off. I didn’t go into it looking for a sandwich, but that’s just how it happened.
The menu is what you’d expect from a golf course pub: there were burgers and sandwiches, soups and salads, and appetizers like chicken tenders and nachos. It wasn’t going to be an easy choice because unfortunately they didn’t have a menu item that allowed you to try a little bit of everything.
I decided to go with something golfish, so it came down to the 19th Hole Burger, with cheddar, bacon, grilled bourbon onions, BBQ sauce, lettuce and tomato, and The Golf Club, which is a triple decker sandwich with roast turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, American cheese and mayo.
I opted for the sandwich, but substituted extra bacon for the ham, and cheddar for American, and fries for chips. I also ditched the mayo.
There were plenty of tables in the shade, but I chose one in the sun. I had spent all morning in the office admiring the sunshine (and working) and wanted to finally enjoy it.
I did just that – and the sandwich. The bread was crunchy, but soft. That allowed for the cheddar to be slightly melted and there was loads of bacon. The turkey had a nice flavor and the whole sandwich had a good balance to it.
The beer-battered fries are the way to go. I could try to explain just how good they were, but you should try them for yourself.
While I pride myself on being able to eat, I didn’t finish the whole thing. I took one of the four sandwich wedges to go, along with a few fries. Don’t worry though, I finished it about an hour later.
While water was my drink of choice, there were plenty of delicious looking beers to choose from.
The 19th Hole also serves breakfast sandwiches with some pretty clever names.
