Chances are, you know how to walk. Whether you like to do it outside of what’s required to live your daily life is another story.
But we must let you know that it is a good source of exercise, and this Saturday, it also happens to be a great way to raise money for the New Hampshire Association for the Blind.
So if you feel like using those legs for more than making your way to the refrigerator for another bowl of ice cream, sign up to take part in the 13th annual Walk for Sight.
The walk is only a little more than 2 miles – a distance even we could complete – and doesn’t start until 11 a.m. So you can even sleep in a little bit and still take part.
And while this is a fundraiser and teams have been collecting money for some time now, in no way does that mean you can’t participate. You just won’t end up on the list of top fundraisers, unless you know some very wealthy people looking to give some cash away. In that case, send us their name and contact info.
You can sign up today, tomorrow (unless you’re reading this on Saturday) and even right before the walk. It’s $20 for adults and $5 for children under 12. And if you wanted to do a quickly-thrown-together fundraiser to add to that total, the association will take anything you’ve got to offer. In the previous 12 years, more than $650,000 has been raised.
The walk is going to happen rain or shine, because with an event of this size, you just have to pick a date and hope the weather holds out. If it’s raining, we suggest wearing a good rain jacket.
Unfortunately, at this point, your registration fee doesn’t guarantee you a T-shirt, but there still might be some available. But what it does give you is a barbecue lunch, live entertainment and an eye screening.
Registration/check-in begins at 10 a.m. with the walk starting at 11 a.m.
The walk starts and ends at the New Hampshire Association for the Blind headquarters at 25 Walker St. You will basically make your way to Bicentennial Square and back.
If you have already registered, you can pick up your T-shirt this week – just call ahead (224-4039) to let them know you’re coming.
And just an FYI, it is not suggested that you bring your dog because there will be guide dogs helping walkers on the course.
There will also be raffle tickets available: one for $5 or three for $10 with lots of great prizes to win.
And there’s still time to sign up for #WalkInMyShoes. This feature will let 20 individuals experience what it’s like to be on Main Street as a visually impaired pedestrian. Using a blindfold or simulation glasses, you’ll have a chance to wander around downtown – with the help of trained sighted guides, of course. We did it a little while back and in case you missed it, here’s a link: theconcordinsider.com/ 2016/05/03/walk-in-my-shoes.
