There’s nothing quite like fresh veggies.
You know the ones that have just been picked from the garden and are so crisp and flavorful. And there’s many options to get those veggies as the summer rolls along.
There’s planting your own crop and waiting patiently to see just what becomes of those seeds you put in the ground. But even if you are successful in your growing endeavor, you won’t reap the benefits for some time.
You can always go to the Concord Farmers’ Market on Saturdays or the Penacook Village Farmers Market on Mondays once it opens in June. Or you could just sign up for Local Harvest CSA and go once a week to for a pickup.
Local Harvest has three share seasons, which starts with Green Lovers from May 25 to June 8.
It’s a short three-week session that is all about the lettuce, Swiss chard and any other green you might think of.
The Summer Abundance shares last 18 weeks, starting June 15 through the middle of October, which is then followed by the Fall Harvest share beginning on Oct. 19.
And you can sign up at any time, although if you want to enjoy all the CSA has to offer, it’s best to do so ahead of time.
“We let people sign up at any time because we have the six farms who can accommodate,” said Anna Muncy of Local Harvest.
The CSA is made up of six area farms and a few local pick up locations.
The Green Lovers is held on Wednesdays, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church (274 Pleasant St.) and is a market style – that you means you pick what you want to take home.
The market style approach is also done at the church for the Summer Abundance on the same day and time, but you also sign up for pre-bagged shares to pick up at Barb’s Beer Emporium (249 Sheep Davis Road, 2:30 to 7 p.m.) or Cole Gardens (430 Loudon Road, 2:30 to 5 p.m.) for Thursday pickups. It takes the guess work out of trying to pick out the perfect container of tomatoes.
For the spring share, you can get the standard – seven to nine items – or the full, which is more veggies.
In the summer, there’s the basic (five to six items), standard (seven to nine) or full (10-plus).
“We have the different share sizes so we can accommodate different family sizes,” Muncy said. “A family of two will eat a lot less veggies than a family of four.”
Just think of all the veggies you can eat for the next six months. Your mom – and doctor – will be so proud.
You can also add on a bread or pork and poultry meat share.
