It’s not often that you get to drink a beer classified as a breakfast stout, so when we found out the Red Blazer had one on tap, trying one was a no-brainer.
If the name Founders Breakfast Stout sounds familiar, it’s because it should be. This is the beer that caused controversy last year because of the beer’s label depicting a baby. After a bunch of political wrangling, the beer overcame a mini ban and is now available in New Hampshire, baby label and all.
But we’re more concerned about the taste – which is very good. It’s a dark stout that packs a punch – 8.3 percent alcohol by volume – and because it’s so strong, it’s served in little 11-ounce glasses (you can opt for a bigger one, if you dare). But even though there’s a lot of alcohol, it’s still a very drinkable beer.
It has noticeable hints of coffee – which works very well in this case – and also tastes a bit toasty. It smells a little chocolatey, but it doesn’t have a particularly strong chocolate taste.
It is a stout, so it’s a little heavier than your run-of-the-mill Bud Light or Michelob Ultra, but it isn’t like trying to drink a root beer float, either. You shouldn’t have much trouble putting a couple of these down during lunch (or breakfast).
