City Briefly

Last week, City Manager Tom Aspell was so excited about the first day of spring that he couldn’t wait to pass along all the upcoming information about spring projects in the city. So like he does each week, he compiled all the big news for Concord in to the City Memo.

It’s back

South Main to get face-lift

On Monday, March 28, the Main Street reconstruction project will resume.

Construction will begin on the east side of South Main Street, from Pleasant Street to Concord Street. Northbound traffic will be closed on South Main Street from Concord Street to Pleasant Street; and southbound traffic will be restricted to one lane from Pleasant Street to Concord Street. This traffic pattern will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until July 18, at which time work will begin on the west side of South Main Street, Aspell writes.

So in other words, just make sure not to go down the side of the street all those construction vehicles are on.

All side streets will remain open to traffic. All through traffic will be encouraged to use Storrs Street or State Street to detour the construction. Signs and variable message boards will be in place to advise drivers of the alternative routes.

Construction hours will be the same as last year, typically 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday; and 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. Similar to last year’s construction season, two-hour parking on South Main Street within the work area, from Pleasant Street to Concord Street, will be free, Aspell writes.

Got to love free parking.

Signage will also be in place to direct drivers to the nearest municipal surface lots and parking garages.

It’s a circle

Roundabout info session

The Engineering Services Division is hosting a public information meeting on Thursday at 6 p.m., in the Broken Ground School Cafeteria, regarding the Exit 16/Mountain Road/Shawmut Street Roundabout Project, Aspell writes.

Yay, more construction near our office.

The purpose of the meeting is to present the latest roundabout design features, as well as to get feedback from residents and city officials and outline a tentative construction schedule for the 2016 season. The public is encouraged to attend.

Be on the lookout

Construction news

Construction on Pleasant Street at the east entrance drive to Concord Hospital will resume during this week. Installation of traffic signal equipment is expected early this week, followed by intersection roadway construction from late March to late April.

Intersection improvements, including the activation of the new traffic signal and two-way access at the east entrance drive to the hospital are expected by early May.

It’s around the corner

Sign up for summer camp

Concord Parks & Recreation summer camp registration is now open! In addition to their three traditional day camps for kids in grades 1-8, they also offer the following specialty camps: Farm Camp, Dance Camp, Track & Field Camp, Lego Camp, Cooking Camp, Archery Camp, Tennis Camp, Soccer Camp, Golf Camp and Film Making Camp. Your child is sure to find something to spark their interest, Aspell writes.

We don’t know about your children, but we sure would like to take part in some of those camps.

Visit concordparksandrec.com for more information or to register for any of the camps.

A new look

Park tree canopy raised

Parks maintenance staff and the General Services Department’s tree crew recently completed raising the tree canopy at Terrill Park, along the top of the river bank, in order to increase and improve views of the Merrimack River and the Capital building, Aspell writes.

We all need better views of the river and the famous dome.

They also cleared a swath of trees where the new river walk will access the river. Terrill Park is a 21-acre park set on the banks of the Merrimack River. There are groomed trails for a morning jog or an afternoon stroll. The park also has a fenced-in dog park. The view of the river and the State Capital building offer great photo opportunities, Aspell writes.

We always like good photo opps.
