In case you haven’t heard, there’s this thing called the Science Cafe put on at The Draft and moderated by the Monitor’s own David Brooks. This month’s topic is the revolution in modifying genes via the technology known as CRISPR. Panelists include Subhash Minocha and Thomas Davis, professors of Plant Biology and Genetics at UNH. The talk begins at 6.
Wednesday
If you don’t know about R.P. Hale, then you haven’t read past this page yet. There’s a story about him and his concert tonight at the Audi on page 4. It’s free, doors open at 7 p.m. with the music starting at 7:30.
It’s safe to assume that everybody likes pizza, even those who really aren’t supposed to eat it. And having a bunch of local pizza shops in one place for a taste testing is kind of a dream come true for us. So you better believe that we’ll be taking a little trip to NHTI, from 4 to 7 p.m., for Pizza Wars, an annual fundraiser for the school’s criminal justice club. It’s just $5 for all-you-can-eat pizza and drinks – and you can even vote for the best in town.
Thursday
You all probably remember the trials of Kat McDonough and Seth Mazzaglia, the people held responsible for the murder of UNH student Lizzi Marriott. It was one of the most highly publicized cases in N.H. in recent memory. Well, authors Kevin Flynn and Rebecca Lavoie wrote a book about it and return to Gibson’s Bookstore with Dark Heart: A True Story of Sex, Manipulation, and Murder, another chapter of their N.H. true crime. The event is free and open to the public, and begins at 5:30 p.m.
Friday
Every month, the NHTI Film Society gets together to show another movie that many of you have never heard of. Unless you’re a movie buff like them.
Tonight at 7 p.m., the society will screen Beatocello’s Umbrella.
The film is in Swiss-German, French, English and Khmer with English subtitles, so remember those reading glasses. It will be shown in the Sweeney Hall Auditorium, S-122. Admission is free to NHTI students with a valid NHTI ID, and all others can join by paying the suggested $5 donation.
It’s Super Stellar Friday at the Discovery Center and it’s all about Northern Lights. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with all kinds of cool programming.
Saturday
Every year for the last 14, the Concord Community Music School has held a mandolin festival and they always host a concert, too. This year’s will be held tonight at 7:30 at the music school.
The concert features Mike Compton, Robin Bullock, Baron Collins-Hill, Glen Loper and David Surette, with special guest Susie Burke.

If you’re between the ages of 10-16 and enjoy singing opera, then have we got the perfect thing for you. Piccola Opera will hold open auditions for the Humperdinck opera, Hansel & Gretel, from 9 to 11 a.m. at their Concord studio on 8 N. Main St.
Roles include: Hansel, Gretel, mother, father, witch, forest animals/gingerbread cookies, and dancing angels. Singers are asked to prepare a song for the audition and an accompanist will be provided.
Mary Ann Esposito, who just so happens to be the host of PBS series Ciao Italia, will be doing a book signing at the Winter Farmers’ Market at Cole Gardens, from 10 to 11 a.m.
So not only can you pick up your fresh produce, meat and baked goods, but you can get a real life autograph on your very own copy of Esposito’s latest cookbook, Ciao Italia Family Classics, featuring more than 200 recipes. There will even be Ciao Italia aprons for sale to be signed.
The Children’s Place and Parent Education Center is hosting an open house, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event will feature open play with play dough, blocks, painting, dress-up, sand table, jumping area, kitchen, library and puppet theatre, along with refreshments and a raffle for a free birthday party.

Got a case of the Mondays? Well, break up the first day of the work week by enjoying some beautiful music from soprano Chiho Kaneko and Peter Beardsley on organ/harpsichord and piano at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 21 Centre St., beginning at 12:15 p.m. You can even bring your bagged lunch to eat while taking in the free concert.
