It’s almost time for the latest and greatest toys, electronics and deals to dominate the television airwaves for what will likely feel like months on end, and that can only mean one thing – the holidays are upon us.
But while many of us make our way to store after store looking for the perfect gift for everyone on our shopping list, there are lots of people out there not as fortunate. Many of our community members won’t find any gifts under the tree this year, not unless you decide to help out.
Every year, the Insider teams up with the Granite United Way to spread the word about nonprofit organizations, food pantries and service groups in the area that need you help, whether it be through volunteering or donations.
So if you keep reading, you’ll find lots of ways you can make a difference this holiday season. There’s a big need for nonperishable food items, clothing, toys for young children and personal care items, as well as your time. And keep in mind that this list is just the tip of the iceberg – there are plenty more groups that could use help this year.

Adult/Senior Items: As winter approaches, there is always a need for hats, gloves, scarves, coats, and boots for adult men and women. There is an ongoing need for personal hygiene items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, etc.
Gift Certificates/Cards: Gift cards to CVS, Wal-Mart for haircuts, BAM, local coffee shops, and restaurants (McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts are always a favorite) would help our clients buy food, personal care items, and other things they may not otherwise be able to afford. Gift cards to Market Basket are appreciated due to many of our clients shopping there.
Other: We traditionally hold a holiday party in between Thanksgiving and Christmas for our residents, tenants and staff. Having a “performer” come in to entertain folks would add a lot to the festivities! Holiday Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer with your family, friends, or coworkers and help beautify one of the buildings that Families in Transition maintains for homeless families by cleaning, painting, or doing other light maintenance work. Donate your time this holiday season to our OutFITters Thrift store – with locations in Manchester or Concord, you can help sort and organize the donated items we sell. 100 percent of proceeds from the store goes directly back to funding our housing and services, so your volunteer time will make a huge difference in ensuring that the stores are profitable.
Adopt-a-Family/Individual: Families in Transition’s FIT Wish program enables children in our program to ask for three items they would like for the holidays that have a total value of $75. Donors can choose to sponsor a child or a family and purchase the child’s holiday wishes. Here is a short list of wishes: For boys: Newborn to walker; ages 10 months to 12-plus months: Toys with lights and sounds, learning toys that teach letters; ages 3-4: Nerf footballs, toy CD player, Play-Doh Cars, Marvel characters, Lego Dimensions or anything Legos; age 8: Minecraft mini figures; age 9: Video games for PlayStation 4; age 10: Tablet; age 11: Video games for PlayStation 4; age 13: Levi Jeans Size 16. For girls: Winter clothes size 3 months; ages 3-5: Frozen bed set toddler size, times two, My Little Pony, Barbies and dolls; age 7: Tablet.
Food Basket/Food Drive Needs: FIT operates five food pantries across our 17 buildings in Concord, Manchester and Dover for the participants in our program. We are in chronic need of canned meats, baby food, pastas, canned fruits and vegetables, boxed meals, soups, rice, beans, macaroni and cheese, snack items, and similar items.
Children/Teen Items: Winter clothing – new coats, boots, hats, gloves, scarves, snowsuits. Toys/gifts for older and younger children, especially learning games for young children and art supplies.

CAT and MTA bus passes are also needed to get to job interviews and appointments. Gift certificates for entertainment including movie passes, bowling, restaurants and Best Buy are also needed to provide families with an opportunity to enjoy an evening out with their family without having to incur any financial stress.

Granite United Way – VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)
Mission: Provides free income tax preparation for low-to-moderate income people and is seeking volunteers. Granite United Way operates VITA sites in Manchester, Salem, Concord, Franklin, Laconia, Littleton and White River Junction.
Volunteer Needs: VITA needs your help to serve more people, our specific needs are for: Intake Specialists – greet tax filers, conduct an intake review to make sure all documents are present for a complete and accurate tax return, and offer resources for other financial needs filers may have. Tax Preparers – No previous tax or finance experience necessary, just a computer aptitude and a willingness to learn. Training and software are provided. Volunteers are expected to complete a standards of conduct certification and commit 3-5 hours every week or every other week from January until early April.

Mission: The center distributes a mid-day meal to home-bound seniors (Meals on Wheels) and provides seniors with programs that promote wellness, independence and healthy aging.
Towns/Areas Served: Allenstown, Chichester, Epsom, Hooksett and Pembroke.
Adult/Senior Items: The center will create a seasonal gift bag for 100 home-bound seniors. We would appreciate donations of sample size unscented hand cream, Chap Stick, kitchen towels and small seasonal decorations.
Deadline to Receive Donations: Dec. 14.
