Another week, another full slate of cool things to do around the city. It really never ends here at the Insider. Telling people about cool stuff is kind of what we do.
So without further ado, ahem:
Wednesday
∎ Are you into poetry? If so, then you’ll want to head over to Gibson’s Bookstore at 7 p.m. for the Poetry Society of New Hampshire’s monthly meeting.
This month’s headliners are A.M. Juster and Gary Margolis. An open mic follows their readings, but make sure to get there early to get a spot on the sign-up sheet. All are welcome, and newcomers are encouraged.
Thursday
∎ If you’re into computers and you’re a teenager, check out the Concord Computer Science Club for Teens at Concord Public Library from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Bring your own laptop or borrow a Chromebook (which requires a library card and parental permission). You’ll learn about programming computers, cool computer community service activities and more. No experience is necessary, and it’s free, so that’s always good.
Call 225-8670 or visit concordteens.tumblr.com for more information.
∎ If you’re a teen (or tween) who’s into computers and techie stuff like that, you’ll probably also be interested in checking out ConcordTV’s junior host auditions from 3 to 5 p.m.
Kids ages 9 to 13 can audition to be one of the station’s next junior hosts. This is your last chance though, so make sure you call 226-8872 or send an email to doris@yourconcordtv.org to get a spot.
Friday
∎ Doesn’t everybody love a good book? And a good local author? Well luckily, Gibson’s Bookstore is hosting an event featuring both.
Concord author Max Wirestone will be at Gibson’s at 7 p.m. reading selections from his new book, The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss.
Fans of The Guild, New Girl, Scott Pilgrim, Big Bang Theory, Veronica Mars, or anyone who has ever geeked out about something, should like this book, and should therefore go hear about it from the author himself.
∎ Do you like rocking out? How about partying? Eating fine food? Well then Makris Lobster House is the place for you.
Reckless, the self-described most diverse party band in New England, will be tearing it up at Makris starting at 8:30 p.m. Their Facebook page says: “Armed with loads of dance and rock favorites, they will make any party bounce!”
Sounds legit to us.
Saturday
∎ Beans, beans, they’re good for your heart. They’re also what’s for dinner at East Congregational Church.
The church will welcome autumn with a classic New England baked bean and ham supper at 5 p.m. There will also be coleslaw, delicious casseroles, fresh rolls, homemade brown bread, a dessert buffet and more. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for ages 6 to 12, and free for anyone 5 and under.
Also, tickets will be available for a handcrafted full/queen size quilt in a maple leaf pattern.
For more info, call 224-9242 or visit eastchurchucc.org.
Sunday
∎ Nothing says Halloween like a trip to an art gallery, right? Well Kimball-Jenkins is hosting a family Halloween party from 2 to 4 p.m. in the estate mansion.
Show up in your best Halloween costume for an afternoon of fun. There will be mansion tours, costume photos, craft projects, story time and plenty of refreshments.
The cost is $20 per family for up to six people.
For more info or to purchase your tickets, visit kimballjenkins.com/halloween. You can also get tickets at the door.
∎ And if you’re looking to become a college student or just learn more about NHTI, check out the open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visit the campus, meet academic department heads, as well as admissions and financial aid representatives. For more info, call 230-4011 or email nhtiadm@ccsnh.edu.
