Now if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you did the same last week. And for that we thank you. We sure do hope you found our list of things to do around these parts useful and worthwhile.
It’s kinda gonna be one of our weekly things moving forward so get used to being inundated with all kinds of stuff to do that will either motivate you to get off the couch and do something or feel an incredible sense of laziness. Either way, we’ve done our job.
But instead of rambling on for a few hundred more words – something we tend do from time to time, or quite a bit – we might as well get to the point. (It’s okay, we know that’s what you were thinking: Is there really a point to be made? And the answer is yes.)
Wednesday
∎ Ron King, owner of Natural Playgrounds Company, will be at Mill Brook Gallery & Sculpture Garden as part of October’s Wednesday’s Wisdom Pot Luck. King will discuss how his company designs and builds playgrounds without equipment so that children can experience creative, discovery-oriented play. The evening begins at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Those attending are encouraged to bring a dish to share – it is a pot luck after all.
Thursday
∎ If you like sliders and just about anything to do with food, then you have to check out the 10th annual Taste of Concord at the Grappone Conference Center starting at 5:30 p.m. More than 30 area restaurants will be on hand for cooking demos, handing out samples and the annual top slider competition. You get to eat food, need we say more?
∎ The life of a TV star is certainly luxurious and ConcordTV wants to help some of you youngins out there achieve that dream. The second of four auditions for the Junior TV host will be held today, from 3 to 5 p.m. with 15-minute time slots. The final two auditions will be held Oct. 20 and 22.
Friday
∎ The first of three Shrek the Musical, Jr. performances will be held tonight at the Audi at 7 p.m. Put on by the Children’s Theatre Project, the final two shows will take place Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.
∎ McGowan Fine Art will celebrate its new exhibit with an opening reception tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. “Spirituality & Obsession” features the art of John LaPrade, Youdhi Maharajan and James Palmigiano and will run through Nov. 13. Did we mention there will likely be some refreshments at the opening?
∎ After a long week, it can be difficult to put together a quality meal for the family. So why not take the night off of cooking and head over to Grace Episcopal Church for its October supper at 5 p.m. The meal features roast pork, mashed taters and bread pudding for dessert.
Saturday
∎ As you probably know, Concord High School Principal Gene Connolly was diagnosed with ALS last year. So there will be a fundraising walk for Connolly’s family at 11 a.m. before the school’s homecoming festivities. For just $20, you can get your very own Connolly Tough T-shirt and then wear it during the walk. But the hope is to have all the shirts sold prior to the walk, so contact Lisa Lamb at llamb@sau8.org to get yours. Those walking should meet in the high school parking lot about a half hour before the walk.
∎ There will be a special benefit concert by the The Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki Trio to raise funds for the Jakob Murray Lange Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Audi at 7 p.m. The fund provides tuition assistance for children wishing to attend CTP winter vacation or summer theatre camps.
∎ To celebrate Red River Theatres’ 8th birthday, there will be an ultimate movie buff dinner and trivia night: sci-fi edition, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. on the third floor of the Capital Commons Building, 11 S. Main St. Tickets are $80, but include a five-course meal and lots of movie fun.
Sunday
∎ We always encourage exercise, especially when it’s for a good cause. So head down to Memorial Field at 1 p.m. for the annual Making Strides walk. Whether you walk or simply cheer on the walkers, we suggest doing it. For more info, keep reading ’cause this is the Making Strides issue after all and there’s tons of great stuff coming up.
∎ Fred Marple, that Yankee humorist, will be spreading his jokes all around Presidential Oaks today at 3 p.m. So if you need a couple good laughs and those I Love Lucy reruns just aren’t cutting it anymore, you might want to check this out.
