New Hampshire authors at Gibson’s on Thursday
On Thursday, Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m., two New Hampshire authors will present their books at Gibson’s Bookstore (45 S. Main St.) Janet Balch’s Maybe Tomorrow is a memoir of everyday moments. Life, love, challenges, elderly parents, marriage, divorce and raising children.
Midge Goldberg (author) and Valori Herzlich (illustrator) present My Best Ever Grandpa, a book of children’s poetry celebrating grandfathers. The book contains light-hearted illustrations with simple rhyming lines showing kids and grandpas in a variety of settings and activities, such as gardening, watching football, playing soccer and baking.
The event is free and open to the public.

Walker Lecture series kicks off this weekend
The Walker Lecture Series fall performances kick off Friday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. with The Sounds of Frank. Enjoy the soothing sounds of a six-member musical and vocal group with over 25 years of professional experience.
The series continues on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. with Bhutan – The Cloud Kingdom. Noted naturalist-filmmaker Tom Sterling leads the audience through this tiny mountain kingdom located on the eastern shoulder of the tallest mountains in the world, the Himalayas. Discover this independent kingdom.

Manhattan Film Festival coming to NHTI
The NHTI Film Society is hosting the annual Manhattan Short Film Festival Sept. 25-27. Once again, a great collection of short films – 10 are being screened – from a worldwide submission of 678 films. NHTI is one of 250 sites around the world on six continents in which the festival will be screened. Last year’s festival at NHTI had near sell-outs for the evening performances. Tickets available only at the door.
Performance dates will be Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. All performances of the Manhattan Short Film Festival are shown in the Sweeney Hall Auditorium, S-122, on the campus of NHTI. Admission is $10 per person.

Chamber hosting forum on homelessness, addiction
The Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce will host a breakfast forum on Friday, Sept. 25, “Homelessness, Heroin and How We’re Facing the Challenge.” The breakfast will be held at the Grappone Conference Center from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and is sponsored by The Duprey Companies and Mason + Rich Professional Association. The cost is $20 for chamber members and $30 for non-members.
Guest speakers include local professionals and volunteers who are tackling the issue of homelessness and heroin addiction every day. A panel discussion will focus on the effects on our community and services, and what we as a community of residents, law enforcement officials, nonprofit organizations – and the business community – can do to shift this dangerous and growing trend.

Girls Inc. Personal Best 5K slated for Oct. 3
Girls Inc. of New Hampshire will be holding the Personal Best 5K on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 9 a.m. at our Concord Center located at 15 Shawmut St. The Concord Girls’ Center moved to the former Eastman School this past February so the race course has moved along with it. The course will run through the neighborhood and will include a loop in the Batchelder Mill Road Trails. The course is mostly flat and great for both runners and walkers.
Long-sleeved t-shirts will be given to the first 100 registered runners and we will have post-race food (including Puppy Love Hot Dogs), and prizes!
Girls from our three centers are currently training to run the race and experience the exhilaration of crossing the finish line. Please join them on Oct. 3 by registering online at raceroster.com/5568. If you can’t make it, you can still make a donation or pledge a runner. All of the money we raise will provide scholarships to girls in our programs.

Divine Comedy returns to St. Paul’s Church
St. Paul’s Church presents the return of Divine Comedy, a gala evening of laughter to benefit Outreach Ministries on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 5:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy dinner and dessert, hilarious entertainment, live and silent auctions, fabulous door prizes, and a bishop!
The last production of Divine Comedy sold out. Tickets for the show at Tad’s Place at Heritage Heights, 149 East Side Drive, Concord, can be purchased online at stpaulsconcord.org or by calling St. Paul’s Church at 224-2523. Tickets will not be available at the door.
Donations of $40 per ticket (all-inclusive) directly support Outreach Ministries, including the food pantry and clothing bank at St. Paul’s Church, and much-needed community assistance.

Fundraising walk for MS Society on Sunday
The MS Journey of Hope Walk, a fundraising event for the Multiple Sclerosis Society (Greater New England Chapter), will be held at Abbot-Downing School on Sunday, Sept. 27. Eighty five percent of money raised by local clinic teams is returned to the clinics to support their activities with area patients.
The walk begins at 9 a.m.
