The Concord Arts Market will celebrate Pet Day 2011 on Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bicentennial Square. The weekly, juried outdoor market will add oodles of pet-themed vendors to its ranks that day, and this year will feature the first “Canine Mayor of Concord” election.

Enter your dog, and your entry fee directly benefits the day's participating animal rescue groups: Concord-Merrimack County SPCA, Libby's Haven for Senior Canines, Puppy Angels, Live, Let Live Farm and more.

All visitor dogs are eligible to participate and there is no Concord residency requirement – may the best dog win. Any contenders for canine mayor of Concord must appear at Concord Arts Market Pet Day to register (and be photographed for propaganda purposes in the event of an election win!) between 9 and 10 a.m. on Oct. 22. You must bring a photo of your dog. Registration fee is $5. Votes may be cast between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. There is no minimum voting age for this contest. All humans and dogs may cast one vote.

Admission to the event is free. Bicentennial Square is wheelchair accessible, and the market, as always is pets-on-leashes friendly, especially on Pet Day. Downtown parking is free on Saturdays.

Pet Day was conceived in 2009 by Concord Arts Market founder Katy Brown Solsky and event co-producer Kim Beers of Woof Purr Creations. Solsky and Beers wanted to find a way to use the market to focus energy on the fun of pet ownership and the important issue of animal rescue.

Pet Day offerings will include the animal accessories of Feline Feathers, fine art pet portraits from Gloria Paints Dogs, a demo by No Monkey Business Dog Training, tasty pet treats from Beggars Choice Dog Biscuits, custom pet tags and more by Ebony Paws, and of course the pet-safe, locally handmade toys of Beers' Woof Purr Creations. The square will be packed full of tents with delights for both humans and canines.
