Quarry Foreman Ken Littlefield has worked for 20 years with not-so-little blocks of rock — try 15 to 30 tons. Not pounds. Tons. It takes derricks, which are like cranes, and solid chains to pull the stone out of the ground. Teamwork and monitoring makes the day go round.
What do you have to say about the physical aspect of the job?
It keeps me in shape.
What do you do all day?
There are so many different aspects, operating and managing equipment, doing it all. It's versatile.
What is a challenging aspect of your job?
Safety is the main concern, keeping everyone safe. [For example,] if it freezes up and it's dangerous conditions then everyone agrees, it's time to go.
What is the thing you like most about the job?
The good bunch of guys and the owners are considerate of the help. Good owners.
What is the worst thing about the job?
Climbing ladders. I don't like to go down because I know I have to go back up.
What is your favorite thing that has happened at the job over the years?
Trying to keep up with technology; it makes the job easier.
What is a concern about the job?
Worrying about stone falling. If something happens, it happens quick.
