A Fighting Chance

Elizabeth Warren

2014, 9 CDs, 660 minutes

Nonfiction

Elizabeth Warren is the senior senator for the state of Massachusetts and a member of the Democratic Party. In this book, she tells the story of her life from childhood to her time in Washington. She was born in Oklahoma City, Okla. to working class parents who couldn’t afford to send her to college. Recognizing her strength in arguing, she applied for and received a debate scholarship to George Washington University. After two years there, an early marriage and motherhood took center stage. Never giving up on her dream to be a teacher, she went back to school and became a teacher first for special needs students and then a Harvard law professor. During her teaching she became passionate about bankruptcy law and came to know the people who applied for chapter 11. Then came a call from Washington: could she come and advise Congress on the bankruptcy laws? At the age of 61 she began her campaign for the U.S. Senate, challenging Republican incumbent Scott Brown. Highly recommended for people who want to better understand the fuss and hype around politicians and how they function in Washington and on the campaign trail.
